Jon Quick beats the Bruins tonight in Boston 3-2 in a shootout.

Perhaps Quick should be #2 and Tim Thomas #3 behind Ryan Miller for Team USA in Vancouver in 3 weeks.

Quick had some outrageous saves in overtime last night, not to mention that he looked real relaxed during the shootout. (Thomas looked like he was about to blow a gasket).

Check out the save Quick made on the Devils' Dainius Zubrus yesterday (sorry, Wardy). It's the last highlight in the list on the right.

He was awesome last night and kept LA in the game until ex-BC Hobey winner Mike Mottau (the equal of Hobey winners to Gino Toretta as a Heisman winner) gave LA a giftwrapped drop pass turnover into a goal that lead to the clusterf*** 3rd period landslide for the Devils.

The guys from NHL On The Fly were all over Quick's performance. They mentioned that they end up having to praise him almost every night.

We may have another name to talk about in this thread soon -

http://www.usatoday.com/sports/hockey/columnist/woodlief/2010-01-20-red-line-report_N.htm

It's that time of the season when NHL clubs are starting to zone in on U.S. college free agents who will be available to sign once the college season ends in about 2½ months. We've been following a few of the top free agents, and one in particular has caught our fancy.

UMass-Amherst sniper Casey Wellman has potted 17 goals in 20 games to give him a share of the lead nationwide in goals. The 6-1, 185-pound right wing is only a sophomore (the fact that he's 22 years old and in his second year of college is another story altogether), but should be receiving plenty of offers this spring. Indications are he's ready to leave the classroom immediately if NHL clubs come calling.

The kid has excellent athletic genes as he's the son of former major league baseball infielder Brad Wellman. Casey has an NHL-caliber snap shot and slap shot with very good accuracy. He has great speed and quickness for a guy his size and uses it to beat defenders to the outside. He's also really good at finding the seams in the defense and getting open for his shot, and he's always at the ready with his stick on the ice for an immediate release.

Saw that tonight as well. It's the price you pay for having quality players. Just ask this year's BU Terriers.

In fairness, if Wellman jumps the gun and assuming Marcou also leaves, UMass is in deep trouble in the scoring department next year. Their top 3 scorers are gone (Marcou, Wellman, Ortiz) and add the fact that Nolet and Braun, some of the best defenseman in a while will be graduating. I think we are looking at another tough couple of years if this happens. Guys like TJ Syner and Carzo will really have to step it up. My prediction: Wellman stays, Marcou leaves.

Pereira will help with any lost scoring while Sheary will help with lost playingmaking.

DeAngelo also looks like he could be another Syner-type player.

Filiou is the wildcard. He could be a pretty good scorer in Hockey East but his stats in the BCHL are kind of all over the board.
