Or how I stopped worrying and fell in love with the Baltimore Maffia giving Hopkins a Mulligan. Yup 7-7 "Best win we got was Delaware week 2" Johns Hopkins made the tournament for the 39th straight season.

UMass did play spoiler in a HUGE way though knocking Georgetown out of the tournament in East Hartford.

Princeton Bracket
1- Virginia vs. Mount Saint Mary's
8- Stony Brook vs. Denver
5- Duke vs. Johns Hopkins Rolling Eyes (EVIL vs. EVIL)
4- North Carolina vs. Delaware

Stony Brook Bracket
3- Maryland vs. Hofstra
6- Princeton vs. Notre Dame
7- Cornell vs. Loyola
2- Syracuse vs. Army

Hofstra doesn't win the CAA regular season, they don't even make our tournament, and they get in.

Say what? Towson must be thrilled for them.

Wow. Hopkins made it. That's just......wow. Well that just shatters all faith I had in any sort of respectable lacrosse media/coaches. Unbelievable.

Makes no sense.

Hofstra should be out (didn't make confrence tourny)
John Hopkins got in cause of their name

Replacing them should be:

Georgetown and Brown/Yale

Would love to put us in there but we didn't deserve it.

The problem is, several on LaxPower pretty much had the field pegged earlier in the day, with the possible exception of Notre Dame getting in instead of Georgetown.

So they've been able to figure out the various combinations of RPI, SOS and quality wins that it takes to get teams into the tournament, and thus eliminated the talk of "back-room dealings."

Now, if you want to quibble about the formula itself that the committee uses -- one that allowed JHU or Hofstra to make it -- go nuts. Not a whole lot different from the hockey committee using the PairWise, so that everyone pretty much knows what will happen, yet many still believe it can be done better.

Hopkins is due to SOS. Personally, I think teams should win at least 60% of their games, or their tourney, to make it in.

Yes, yesterday was a very good day. Seeing Desko mope off that field made my whole year. "Masters of Memorial Day", my ass.

I had the Hopkins game on Saturday. I was laying on the couch. I drifted off when it was 8-4. When I woke up, it was 18-5. I laughed my ass off.

No sleep lost for the Blue Jays, but their inexcusable admission into the tournament deprived someone more worthy (I'd say Towson, for example - no WAY Hofstra - who didn't even make the CAA top four - deserved to get in over the Tigers.)

Hopkins had no business in the tournament and Duke made that very clear on Saturday. A humiliating loss for the Jays and I was loving every minute of it.

As for Syracuse, like npt3 said, seeing Desko's face after Army cashed in the game winner was priceless. Army had so many opportunities in the overtime periods and couldn't cash in. I was thinking it was only a matter of time before Syracuse took advantage and won because as the announcers reminded us over and over, "Syracuse doesn't lose in the dome" - when Army finally finished it, awesome....

Now with Cuse and Hop out, I can truly enjoy the rest of the tournament.

All in all, a pretty good first round. Also, the Loyola/Cornell game was very good. Cornell was up 9-2 in the third quarter and Loyola stormed back to force OT. Cornell pulled it out in 3OT. A very entertaining game.

Committee just needs to do a better job to make sure deserving teams get in - but we probably shouldn't hold our breaths for that anytime soon.

I've been arguing for a while that the tournament needs to be expanded like the DIII tournament - introduce four to eight play-in games to deflate the bubble a bit and make sketchy choices like future Hopkins' work harder to prove their worth/get worthy bubble teams, like UMass or Towson a real shot, albeit with a slightly longer road. I know that the justification for the DIII system is that DIII is about 3X bigger than DI, but the selection inequities are getting more glaring as the years go on, and as DI parity grows. NCAA should welcome this.

Now that 'Cuse, Hopkins and Princeton are gone, half the remaining field is chasing a first title.

With the exception of Virginia, the last team left to win it all was North Carolina in 1991.
