Florida International sophomore ended the season with a 56-game hitting streak after his team was bounced from the NCAAs by Dartmouth. He's two shy of the Division 1 record set by Robin Ventura (Oklahoma State) in 1987.

FIU just so happens to open its 2011 season Feb. 18-20 at home ... against UMass.

How cool would it be if some UMass player seizes the big stage and makes a name for himself? Shades of when Central Florida's Chad Mottola was a top-five prospect and, with the stands packed with scouts, Ron Villone struck out 17 and Mottola went 0-for-5. Villone ended up the No. 14 overall pick by the Mariners and still was active until earlier this season.

Sorry, should have specified ... still active in the majors. He's no longer on the Nats' 40-man roster, but signed to a minor league deal.
