Florida International sophomore ended the season with a 56-game hitting streak after his team was bounced from the NCAAs by Dartmouth. He's two shy of the Division 1 record set by Robin Ventura (Oklahoma State) in 1987.
FIU just so happens to open its 2011 season Feb. 18-20 at home ... against UMass.

How cool would it be if some UMass player seizes the big stage and makes a name for himself? Shades of when Central Florida's Chad Mottola was a top-five prospect and, with the stands packed with scouts, Ron Villone struck out 17 and Mottola went 0-for-5. Villone ended up the No. 14 overall pick by the Mariners and still was active until earlier this season. _________________ I wrote this ... it's gotta be true. |

Sorry, should have specified ... still active in the majors. He's no longer on the Nats' 40-man roster, but signed to a minor league deal. _________________ I wrote this ... it's gotta be true. |
