78-79 and 79-80. http://www.nba.com/sixers/history/index.html just click on the "season stats" links on the right for the 70's and 80's.

This is what I know of Skinner's pro ball career:
Joventut (Barcelona, Spain), 1980-81
Philadelphia 76ers, 1979-80
New Jersey Nets/Philadelphia 76ers, 1978-79
New Jersey Nets/Detroit Pistons, 1977-78
New York Nets (NBA), 1976-77
New York Nets (ABA), 1974-76
Erving was with the ABA Nets from 73-76, so he and Al were together for 2 seasons. Erving went to the 76ers for the 76-77 season, so he and Al were together for that 79-80 season, and part of the 78-79 season, whenever Al was moved.
3+ seasons together in total. |

Of course I have to again point out my favorite Al Skinner trivia fact. He is the only player in NBA history to score for both teams in the same game.
The Nets were playing the Sixers, when a leaking roof suspended the game at halfime, to be completed the next time the Nets were in town. In the meantime, Skinner was part of a multi player trade between the two teams, so he played the second half as a Sixer. The others involved in the trade also played, but Al was the only one to score for both teams. |

Could that even happen today?
What would happen if a player was traded during a game to the team he was playing against? Could he go into the locker room at halftime and switch teams and play? I know it's crazy, but is it possible?

Just a correction (maybe) before I cost someone a lost bar room bet. I can't find anything that backs up my assertion that Skinner scored for both teams and that the leaky roof caused the suspension of the game. What I find on the Internet is that the game was protested and picked up in the fourth quarter and that Skinner did not play in the game. Until I find an actual box score, I stand by my memory (hence the warning about any bar room bets) and assert that the other accounts are wrong. Anyone have Al's phone number? |
