The sky is falling the sky is falling...oh wait no its not.
First, Teglia was not even dressed last night so it could have gotten interesting with an injury early on.
Second, UMass did not have a true exhibition game this year, Northeastern did, so that was the first full 60 minute (well 65 minute) game they played since last year. The last 10 minutes could be chalked up to just not having been through a real game.
Mel, I think you are wishing NU wasn't talented, there is talent on that team, granted it was the coaches first game in over ten years, but its not like they are a D3 team with a bunch of walkons. Cronin left the bench with some high quality players and a good goalie, NU will struggle this year, but after watching last night, it might not be as bad as some thought.
One period does not make the season, this team should finish around 6th place, and that should be the realistic expectation for this team given the rest of the league.
Since you seem to be already on the fire Toot bandwagon after 65 minutes of hockey, I'm going to throw the question I raised last year out again: Who do you replace him with? |

But I stand by the rest of what i said. It's still a young team.
By slight expectations, I mean 6-8 in Hockey East. In the most realistic best case scenario I can envision, the team finishes somewhere between 6-8 this year, challenged for home ice the next year, and challenges for the league title when the roster is senior heavy.

Well by signing him quietly to an extension last season, you miss out on the Mark Dennehy sweepstakes and Merrimack quickly signs him for the decade. Red loses his patience and is gone.

No win since last January 22nd (0-9-4) and 9-31-6 the last season and a half for the flagship school of Massachusetts. And another consensus 6-8 place finish here on the board.
Jon Quick extended Toot's stay here an extra few years as the focus by my alma mater continues to be on football and basketball.

A two year extension with a year remaining on his contract late last summer. |

First, I'm pretty sure that Dennehy signed a six year extension last fall and tacked four more years on it this spring when all the jobs were opening up. That being said if UMass does have an opening I'd hope they would at least make a play for him.
Now onto Pecknold - he just signed a pretty good extension himself but lets look at his record a bit, his NCAA visit was when Quinnipiac was a member of AHA, since they have been in the ECAC he has come close to the NCAA's one time and been middle of the pack the rest of the time. Which means he has gotten less results in the ECAC at a school that pours more resources into their hockey program than Toot did at Princeton.
Now could he come to UMass and take us to higher highs, maybe but looking at the record he would likely be an equal hire.
For what its worth I don't have an answer for this question, I just put it out there since there are a lot of people who seemingly want Toot gone but haven't thought out the flip side of that: Is there someone out there that can bring the program to the next level? And that answer is a hard one to figure out. |

| Big name, but can he coach at the college level? Time will tell, but sometimes a big name doesn't bring wins, in theory Tim Army was a somewhat big name and alum at Providence and we all know how that worked out. |

Guys, we are one game in at this point. We have had some pretty good recruiting classes in the last few years and Toot kinda sorta built the fucking program, so for the love of god, chill out.
Lets at least wait until the new year before we fire up the fire Toot machine again

Toot's signed through next season, so I don't understand why UMass would let him go early and pay him for the remainder of his contract (especially with the money being spent on the football upgrade). Let's stop that conversation.
As for who will replace him when he leaves (because eventually everyone leaves whether or not it's on their own terms)... I'm not a big fan of people saying "Who would come here? Name someone.". Saying such things implies a belief that UMass is a hellhole and not worthy of a good coach. I just hope that a national search is conducted to find a high-quality coach when Toot leaves UMass. As the saying goes, you can't win if you don't play! Do a search and see what candidates pop up. If the best candidate winds up being on the current staff, so be it! If not, so be it as well! |

For what its worth, I was in no way shape or form implying UMass is a hellhole. I actually believe that when a coaching search is conducted there will be plenty of great applicants.
I'm more curious when I ask the question to see who answers and what the answers are, the answers or lack of answers sometimes tell the story themselves.
That being said, I fully agree with what is being said it is far too early to be talking about this one week into the season. |
