Plenty of good chances but Madore stood on his head at the end there. _________________ I wish Hockey East was an all-sports conference. |

Merrimack, #1 in the country, UMass, #9 in hockey east. Total joke. |
Ok, where is UMass going to get another $500k after they spent $600k in buyouts yesterday? Seriously, Toot isn't going anywhere like it or not. Can you imagine what the Globe would be printing with $1.1mil in buyouts in a single year?
Also, yes Dennehy was an assistant at UMass, its great he has brought Merrimack places nobody ever thought. But he was well under contract when Toot signed his extension and Merrimack has shown they will step up with lots of years anytime someone is interested in Dennehy. So to think that if UMass came knocking he would just come running back is a bit naive.
I like Mark a lot, but remember its only in the last year that his stock has shot up as much as it has. I think a lot of folks are looking back with wishful thinking of what could have been. |

I can only imagine that conversation.
McCutcheon: "I need money to buy out Toot Cahoon."
Holub: "We're not New Hampshire. Find a way to win with the coach that we do have." |

Unless the Football Team and Basketball Team both start winning like and making money, I think Toot is here until his contract expires.
Also, let's not forget- this is still a young team. They are a bunch of sophomores with very inexperienced goaltending. _________________ I wish Hockey East was an all-sports conference. |

Yes, a young team, but 9th place in Hockey East and a loss last night to a really bad Vermont team? This team looks to be in huge trouble, but I guess we will have to suffer two more years under a coach who it appears to me has lost it. Hopefully the crowds wont diminish to basketball level, but at the rate this program is declining, I wouldn't be surprised.
When effort is lacking in the 12th and 13th games of the season, I think it is clear that something is rotten in Denmark. It will be interesting to see what happens with pereira after his benching last night.
As for Merrimack, it's not so much I want Dennehy here, but the fact that a puny school like Merrimack can attract players that allow it to rise to number 1 in the country, while our state U continues to flounder in a state of craptasticism. _________________ If only I could be as great a fan as Pierce9999.... |

First off Dennehy has gotten a few breaks, other than Dacosta he has been able to keep his top notch players for all four years.
Lets jump into the what if machine now:
What if Quick stayed four years?
What if Carlson came to UMass?
What if Marcou stayed four years?
What if Wellman stayed four years?
What if Irwin stayed for four years?
The players have done what they needed to do, but if Dacosta left after his first year and Cannata left last year while the iron was hot where do you think Merrimack would be? |

What if, what if, what if. He has still built a number 1 program at the smallest school to have a division 1 sports program in the country. He has built a #1 program that has facilities that don't compare to some top high school facilities (although they have improved a great deal recently). How has he gotten these players to Merrimack? How is he getting players that UMass is not getting? What's the secret to get players to actually want to play and live in North Andover, Mass.? The current state of the UMass program is sad. Someone is responsible for that.
One last thing. Maybe those UMass players left because in addition to having an opportunity to play in the pros, maybe they did not like playing here. This is pure speculation, but it is something that has to be considered. _________________ If only I could be as great a fan as Pierce9999.... |

1) Maine used to be an automatic 5500-6000 crowd while BU was a 6500-7000 crowd. What have we done lately? Oh.
2) Do you really think it's the puny school or might it be the coach and his fast rising reputation? |

He didn't.
He didn't and I have nothing to back up my suspicion, but I'd love to know why.

Why do you think that is and teams like, say, UMass hasn't? Were our top notch players better than their's? I think we all agree on Quick, so..
No one (Ottawa) was in a real rush for Decosta as I remember after year 1. He blew the league up last year so obviously the the bigs were interested. He has 5 points in 21 games and is a team leading -9 this season. 99% of these NCAA guys including your list and Decosta weren't/aren't ready and could use the extra year+.
2. Going on track record only, they'd probably be at least in the middle of the pack in Hockey East, based on Dennehy's recruiting skills and a guy named Darren Yopyk who continues to feed players to him.
Merrimack head coach Mark Dennehy on Cannata: “I’ve been lucky enough to recruit or coach some very talented goaltenders, including Jon Quick at UMass and Dave Stathos at Princeton. Joe has as much if not more potential than all of them.” |
