This kid is a big time recruit, Georgetown, Nova, and Providence were all looking at him today. I wish we knew that was coming to visit UMass for the Xavier game, we would have got the student section to start a chant of his name. That is going on a lot lately and is bringing many recruits to the schools as they are feeling the love from the school and students already. |

| UConn has offered him, as well. With Calhoun's health/possible looming retirement and Napier saying UConn players were playing with no heart, maybe watching UMass do their thing yesterday, and watching Chaz do what he does on the floor inspired him to think more about us. Great to get him on campus, but the big fish are after him... |

Great day to have him come!
ESPN has him as a 3 star recruit with offers from UConn, Maryland, and South Florida. Couldn't read the report as I'm not an "insider." No references to any UMass interest anywhere. Maybe he came to the game just because he felt like going to a college hoops game. Or maybe he was with some other prospects. He's prepping at Notre Dame Academy in Fitchburg. _________________ Always remember that you are unique, just like everyone else. |

| ^ That's right, just checked his Twitter. Ricky Harris asked him if we were recruiting him. He said 'no' just that he was going to the game with Myles Davis, his prep teammate who committed to Xavier. Oh well. |

I'm glad you posted this. I was watching him last year and he was listed as a point guard and listed as the highest ranking unsigned player at that position. Given that Traynham left Amherst in a cloud of smoke, I thought we might go after him.
I talked to a few people who had seen him play HS and they didn't think he had the game to play point in the A10.
Now it appears he went post-grad and is drawing attention. Go figure!!
The ESPN write-up has not changed much, other than listing him as a SG, but they say the following:
| Quote: | Weaknesses:
Sam is thin at this point and needs to get more loose balls. As he continues to develop his offense skills, primarily shooting the perimeter shot, his stock will rise.
Bottom Line:
Sam is starting to turn into solid point guard at the C-USA/CAA level. |
Offers from ConnU, South Florida, Maryland, and UCF. I guess maybe his dad whipped him into shape? Not getting offered last year must have been a reality check.
Wherever he goes, he will have a lot of pressure on him just being Sam Sr.'s son.
His "need to get more loose balls" is something DK would not tolerate. If he is a work in progress, I'm sure Derek could give him the appropriate coaching. But I honestly think that he is not the type of point guard DK wants. Not to say he doesn't have talent, but if he isn't diving for loose balls he doesn't want it enough.
Got to wonder if having an NBA dad might create some issues. Maybe UCF is a good place for him. They have experience dealing with sons of NBA All Stars. _________________ Refuse To Lose!!! |

I have seen him play many times...... Not a fan. I don't like his jump shot, he is always off balance when he shoots.... Makes poor decisions and turns the ball over. He is athletic and could improve and contribute in college but not a fan of his current game.
~~~ What do I know though, I am just a fan. ~~~ _________________ "....I want to see our program be the UMass I know and love." - DK
| Sam Cassell Jr. attended the Umass/Xavier game because his ND Prep teammate is heading to Xavier next year. He has no interest in Umass |
That may be true; But I don't know.
Trey had signed with GW and UMass while Sam Jr. had no offers last year. I'll trust DK's judgement. _________________ Refuse To Lose!!! |
| Trey Davis is not better than Cassell. Not even close, Cassell had offers from Maryland and Florida State way back in august |
Hahaha, people are way too overconfident in the abilities of Trey Davis. Sam Cassell Jr. has PG in his blood and learned from an NBA starter. Let's not kid ourselves here people.
Trey will be a 10 minute a game backup. Cassell will see a lot more than that |
