Across from my office is one of these permaculture gardens. Last fall, I schlepped a bunch of compost around with them. I like the idea. Gotta start somewhere.
From admin:
As you may have read, our campus’ student-led Permaculture Committee has won a place among the top 15 finalists for the White House’s “Campus Champions of Change Challenge,” but they need our votes to be one of the five winners.
The five teams that receive the most online votes by midnight on Saturday, March 3, will be invited to the White House on March 15 and be featured on mtvU and MTV Act, hosting an episode of mtvU’s “The Dean’s List.” I encourage everyone to cast a vote for our campus at

Over the past two years, the UMass Amherst Permaculture Initiative has engaged more than 1,000 student, faculty, staff and community volunteers to transform a ¼-acre of grass lawn near the Franklin Dining Commons into a diverse, edible, low-maintenance garden that supplies fruit, nuts, vegetables, greens and flowers to the dining commons. This year they started a second permaculture garden near Berkshire Dining Commons.
Let’s show our support for their outstanding efforts to make UMass Amherst a greener, sustainable community by sending them to the White House for the recognition they so richly deserve.
Go Green! Go UMass!

| I just voted, looks like we´re in the lead by about 5,000 votes. That´s awesome, hope we can keep it up. It´ll be nice to win SOMETHING this year, haha |

Thanks one and all. Here's the latest email.
Sorry if you've received this and voted already, BUT something big has just happened! Arkansas unexpectedly gained 15000 votes today and has taken over first place due to their project being featured in USA Today. We need a big final push to re-take first place! Please help us with that!

I voted again as well..... Arkansas has gone into the lead. We need a Lou Roe tip off dunk to knock these punks out. _________________ Stop waiting for UMass to do something big and help UMass do something big. - Shades |

| I like it IV - vote early and vote often. I can't help but remember the 1994 Tip-Off Classic. We won that one. |
