Final: Xavier 70 UMass 61

UMass finishes 8-21 and does not qualify for the A-10 tournament.

They could have still used a St. Louis win at Fordham and almost got it. Fordham blew a big second-half lead, but recovered to beat St. Louis in OT, 64-61.

This was a terrible season! I think things have gotten worse instead of better. I hope the hiring of Coach Dawley was not a mistake.

It was not. Please be patient. If you read some earlier stuff there was one game when she only had six healthy bodies. Many others she only had eight. Too many injuries. She has at least four new players signed for next year and could possibly add one or two more. Check out some of the stuff posted on the athletic site for more info.

The 2012-13 team will only have a couple of leftovers from the Marnie Dacko era. Next year's team will be virtually all Dawley recruits, so the pressure will be on to turn the corner.

Patience and understanding needed with injury-riddled UMass women's basketball program

All A-10 teams were announced, and not surprisingly after the tough season, no Minutewomen were on the list.

Overall the season was a big disappointment. Several of the freshmen showed significant improvement but several of the upperclassmen (posts) played extremely poor defense and selfish offense for most of the season. Several players had way too many turnovers and the combo of too many TO's and giving up too many offensive rebs killed this team for the second straight year. The team often did not look like a team on offense because of the posts refusing to kick the ball out to open guards and instead shooting vs double and triple teams.

But there is hope. It appears Dawley is going to change the atmosphere and culture. There are rumors of changes to the current roster. Look for marked improvement next season.

^ I'm not as positive about Dawley and the comments made by former
player Kristina Danella in today's Union weren't good: When asked why she left UMass she said she was tired of losing and that "obviously the coaching change made didn't help in fact they are worse".

The previous regime was wallowing in mediocrity and for the most part did not have hardworking players who were willing to play defense and to play team ball on offense. Zullo, Mosgrove and Teuscher were the exceptions. Dawley was left with no point guard a year ago, freshmen recruits who, for the most part, were not D1 players. This year selfish offense play and poor defensive play by some of the upperclassmen doomed the team game after game. I think Dawley is sick of this after giving the players two years worth of chances to change. She had a good freshmen class and I think it will be the foundation for the future. The culture will be changing and results will follow.

If you look at the roster today it looks like she has cut ties with one of the biggest defensive and offensive issues from last season.

The player from Marist - good for her that she joined a winning program. But I would have more respect for her had she stayed and tried to turn the UMass program around. There is a lot of hard work that has to be done to UMass to recover from the mess left by the previous regime.

Year 2... next year lets see some improvement. I refuse to treat this coach differently than I did DK.

The comments by the former player were unnecessary. Besides, her leaving only added to the lack of decent experienced players. I do think Dawley can get it done. The trick will be in getting very good recruits to come here and stay here for four years. I may be wrong, but from my limited following of women's NCAA hoops, it seems like the top 20-30 programs get virtually all the best players.

^

I'd much rather be aware of this than not. I think those comments are very necessary.

Unnecessary in that she's neither part of the current team or a former player of the current coach. Moreover, she's moved on to a half-decent program. Sounds like she's still bitter about her experience here while she should have moved on emotionally when she moved on physically. Her comments add no insights into the women's team that we didn't already know (i.e. they are a losing program with a new coach).

She was asked a question and she answered it. The reality of the situation with the Women's program is a tough pill to swallow.

Yeah, she answered it, but a simple "I thrilled I'm here at Marist. My focus is on my current team, not my time at UMass. Next question." would have been better. However, she can say what she wants. Until she comes up with something dramatic like "Wesley Spears is giving jewelry to all women on the team" I'm not interested in what she has to say about UMass. I wish her the best of luck in her future endeavors.
