Or so says this British list. Strange ranking to say the least since we're #94 in the country according to US News. Also strange that they think UMass is actually in Shrewsbury.

No, it is in Worcester. On Rt. 9, just over the bridge from Shrewsbury.

University of Massachusetts logo

UMass lent its name to a song by the Pixies, penned by band member (and former student) Frank Black. While he did not complete his degree, UMass alumni include Natalie Cole, Bill Cosby and Paul Theroux. Its harbour-fronting Boston campus, site of the John F. Kennedy Library, is one of five. It has more than 16,500 staff and around 63,000 students.

UMass is in Shrewsbury. The president's office is there:

Interesting. Didn't know that. Still a lame way for them to do it, IMO. Pick a campus.

Interesting choice of alums to list...a couple of entertainers and an author. No knock any of them, but they didn't dig very deep.

I believe that's a downgrade. We used to be 19th on that list.

^I really thing the "ugly" thing about UMass is way overblown. Yeah, there are some eye sores but in the past ten years they have mostly been knocked down or hidden.

The Mullins Center side of campus looks much better, and when the new dorms are completed it will be amazing. There is a major transformation taking place on our campus and it is going to change the way people look at public higher education in MA.

Some of the really old buildings are actually pretty charming. The smokestack has finally come down.

In the next 24 months, a lot of what was considered ugly will have been spruced up or obfuscated by new buildings.

If you've been on campus this year, you may have noticed that they have done a nice job sprucing up things. They've replaced the stone work around the building across from the student union.

I'm glad the Times are at least showing us some love.

US News is crap and a lot of schools are so obsessed with the rankings in that publication that it gets in the way of their ultimate mission.

US News counts all of the UConn campuses as one but UMass as 5 different schools. So UConn's diversity scores go up due to their urban campuses in Hartford and Stamford. Plus their Med school (which is nowhere near as good as Worcester) counts toward their research and fundraising scores. If UConn was ranked on Storrs alone it would look pretty pathetic.

But if you ranked Amherst vs. Storrs - we would be miles ahead. If they ranked Boston vs. Hartford - same deal.

So I actually like the London Times rankings because they compare apples to apples.

Rankings are an idiotic metric for measuring quality. It assumes that only a certain number of institutions are of high quality and anything outside of, say the top 50, are crap.

They should assign ratings, not rankings. But I guess you can't sell as many magazines that way. Rolling Eyes

I'd go so far to say it is COMPLETE bullshit. Everyone has their own opinion, but one of the biggest draws for me to come to UMass was the look and layout of the campus.

This about sums it up about the students no?

Quote:

Though UMass Amherst has sports teams, students have said the games are “mostly used as an excuse to drink,” Unigo.com reported. It’s a small town with a party scene that isn’t much different from those at larger, state schools, leading Unigo.com to give it the number 6 spot on its “No Last Call” list.

Yep. Though that's not necessarily a bad thing. The problem with UMASS, is that these student use it as an excuse but then don't actually attend the games, with football being the biggest example.

I'm afraid the "ugly" tag is going to stick as long as buildings like the Campus Center, Herter, Fine Arts Center, and Tobin are still standing and prominent. Unfortunately, people always seem to overlook the fact that we're also located in one of the most scenic areas of the country.
