We had some information on this past weekend's Junior Day at Gillette. Glad to see the coaching staff is going after a bunch of good local athletes:

With the exception of some BCS opponents and their larger fan bases, drawing as few spectators as the Revs for Eastern Michigans, Ohios, and most MAC schools will still be an initial accomplishment. It's a starting point.

Like him. He looks like he spots the ball well and is pretty fluid in the pocket. Some of the highlights seemed more like highlights for his receivers than him. But gotta trust Molnars ability to gauge a QB. Glad to get someone over BC and UConn especially, but it is nice that PSU and Miami (Fla.) were also talking to him.

I really know very little about recruiting so how does Coach Molnar get a recruit to come to UMass over BC and UConn? Is it the possibility of playing time and opportunity to build a program?

It could be that, or Molnar may be easier to relate to as a QB. Molnar was a QB coach for a very long time, up until when we hired him in fact. He has a track record of success with players in the position including Tony Pike at Cincy in 2009. Also, the run and gun style that we are likely to play puts a lot of spotlight on a QB which can help them get noticed and even drafted. (see Colt Brennan)

No idea what he is actually telling them though when he visits them. For all we know, he may really like the Patriots and want to play at Gillette.

I think those kids are just messing around. The ventiquatro kid is an actual recruit, but not at a very high level. I think his buddies are just being dumb.

Interest from Penn State, UConn, Miami, and BC is one thing, but being a kid's only offer to date does help. Alternatively, other schools may not be interested in a player at his desired position, may want him to PG, may want to see senior films and grades, etc. Just saying, these are legitimate considerations.

It seems like now we have a legit shot of landing some of the better players in the area. NE doesn't produce a ton of guys, but they do produce some very good ones. What we have is gillette. Most of these kids are pats fans, and may have played a championship game there. Once we start landing some of the better players in the area, the flood gates will open. The school is doing a great job of sched. Good games also. We can show these guys that they will be playing the best teams out there.

UMass making splash in NE recruiting

Quote:
Shortly after University of Massachusetts football coach Charley Molnar secured his first recruiting class in February, he talked about how he wanted New England players to form the foundation of his program. Apparently that was more than just talk.

UMass has clearly made New England –- and Massachusetts in particular –- the focus of much of its recruiting efforts.
