Loud?? I'm guessing that none of you guys - especially my friend Kosty - were at the Syracuse game in the Cage in 1962.
UMass 74, Cuse 51 in the next to last home game of the year.
Then, for frosting, we laid 109 on New Hampshire in the last game.
Those games led to our first NCAA bid.
We stood in line to get in and we knew how to make noise. _________________ "Jack didn’t have any envy in him," Calipari said. "He was the greatest coach to ever coach here." |

And the walk from Van Meter was uphill both ways in a blizzard. Every game.

It's A-10 Quarter-Finals time now, as it was 20 years ago today...
#1 UMass 106
#8 Rutgers 94
at the Palestra, Philadelphia PA
It looked like our game against Duquesne the other day was going to flirt with the record for points scored in a game, but to my knowledge, this game 20 years ago still holds that mark.
McCoy and Barbee each had 21. Harper went off for 19 & 16. Anton Brown was the only starter who didn't hit double-figure points, but he seemed just fine dishing the rock with 9 assists.

Speaking of Anton... |

I was at both of those games. As I recall, the NH game was when my fraternity brother, Charlie Fohlin, went wild for a career high 18 points.
I don't recall much standing in line - always used to come early for the Frosh game. |

With the A-10 tournament frenzy, I missed posting this one...
20 years ago (this past Friday)
A-10 Semi-Final
UMass 76 - Rhody 67
UM was down by 3 with 5:19 to play, but went on a 15-0 run to secure the win. Harper only had 4 & 2 at halftime, but finished the game with 20 & 7. Lou Roe provided 10 rebounds off the bench.

And can't forget today, the 20th anniversary of our first-ever A-10 Tourney title.
West Virginia 91
Massachusetts 97
We got out to a 52-28 lead at the half, and even though we gave up 63 furious points to the Mountaineers in the second half, it wasn't enough to overcome that initial deficit.

| 34-9 midway in the first half still stands out for me. |

UMass scored 52 in each half as they destroyed St. Bonaventure, 104-67. Tony Barbee had 18 points in 17 minutes.

This was the Senior Night game for UMass, but it wasn't our last regular-season home game (3/4 vs Rhody). Any veterans around here recall why Senior Night was "moved up"? |
funny.. 26th ranked... don't think they do that anymore |

I loved Pat Forde of ESPN's memories of the 91'-92' team. He speaks about Calipari and writes:
"His 1992 Massachusetts team remains one of the most overachieving units the Minuteman has ever seen, featuring a shooting guard with range so limited he made one 3-pointer all season (Jim McCoy), a 6-foot-3 power forward (Will Herndon), and a left-handed center who stood all of 6-7 (Harper Williams). Somehow, that collection of marginal talent went 30-5 and advanced to the NCAA Sweet 16."
To me, that was what was so great about that team. They were not loaded with superstars but they worked their butts off every minute of every game. _________________ UMass Football-2013 MAC Champions!!!!! |

20 years ago today: UM's first-ever NCAA Tournament win.
Fordham (East 14) 58
UMass (East 3) 85
at the Worcester Centrum

Lots of preview articles in this one, an interesting look back at the build up to our first big run. Also includes a look back at UM's first NCAA Tourney team in 1962.
And the recap also talks about "TV Lou", who seemed to play the hardest when the cameras were on |
