Would love to get these on DVD without commercials to watch again |
Floyd, add them to the sheet please.. link is in the first post.
Now that also brings up a question.. remove or keep commercials.. commercials are a time capsule of the time.. we shun them today, but will look back tomorrow and laugh!
I have software that edits them out automatically.. but it is something to be thought of.. |

Might be fun to keep the commercials for the older stuff. Plus I know I was really into conserving tape back then and may have actually paused the recordings during commercials and halftime. _________________ There ain't no days off. Just some feedback regarding video editing:
I bought some software with the intent of doing some video editing but I have not become proficient with it. I had purchased the cheapest alternative, i think Digital Studio Pro and it was horrible.
Because Staples wouldn't let me return it. So I took the next best alternative and upgraded it to the better version, which appears to be very powerful. As far as I can tell, so far, it looks like something that would allow you do anything you'd need to on the editing side.
I don't have anything to pull video from a VCR yet, and if someone can recommend a vcr to pc solution, please let me know.
I bought a couple o the DVDs from last season (I think vs BU and Holy Cross at the Cage). The quality not great, I am sorry to say, it was just a direct burn without editing out test patterns and loud sound testing for a half hour before the actual game starts. I don't think they got many orders. The Cage game had an actual label and I don't think it had the test pattern. Apparently the demand for those CBS3 games wasn't so good. Maybe that is why they didn't put anything up for this year.
But I do believe that software is capable of auto-detecting scene breaks and commercials. If that process is run on a raw video file it can be made more user friendly -- in that you could use the skip button to go to the next break.
Years ago there was a free DVDSHRINK.EXE program out on the internet that would allow you to copy dvds that were not copy protected. So you could back up your videos with that if it is still out there. And I think it did have some editing options.
I am interested in building a library of any and all UMass games on video. My pulse shot up about 30 bps when I read Coach Tom's posting about the reels. It would be amazing to see that on video.
I wonder if the athletic department has archives that they own copyright to that they would actually be able to put on youtube. Even old clips. I give them credit for the quality of the 100 Seasons video and for putting that stuff on the web. It would be nice if they had other content they could put on the web.
It was a shame that the year they did have tv games to sell on the website the season before Chazz. I think the demand for games in the new offense would be much higher.
The general concept of defining the history of the program and allowing the fans access to the images is definitely something that can only benefit the program. Hope they build on what they already done in that direction. _________________ Refuse To Lose!!! |

OK....I have a pretty good collection of game tapes from '92-'97....a few years ago my wife bought me a VHS to DVD converter program for the PC, and I burned a few of my favorites, but I've loaned the equipment out, and never got it back, so now I'm out of luck for doing any more converting. I also don't really have the time to invest anymore in messing with converting them.
If some you guys have the time to digitize these games and burn them to DVD, or post them online for all to share, I'd be willing to loan out some tapes. To be honest, I will be a little nervous giving all my tapes to someone I don't know, so I probably would be more comfortable loaning out a few at time. I live about a half hour from campus, and would be willing to travel to meet whoever is wiling to burn these games to DVD.
I guess how I'd like to do this is something like this....I will meet you somewhere, and I'll drive closer (or right to) your place, assuming you don't live in Florida or something.....I will give you like 5 tapes and 5 blank DVD's, you burn me 1 copy of each, then make as many copies as you want to share, trade, post or whatever, I'll meet you again in a few weeks, or whatever, I bring 5 more tapes, you return my old tapes and newly burned DVD's, then keep repeating until you have them all. If this works for you, or if You have a better way to do this, shoot me a PM or email or whatever.
I'd say I have 60+ games on VHS from '92-'97. I think pretty much every televised game from Lou Roe's freshman year to Marcus Camby's junior year is in there. So, if anyone has any thoughts, let me know. |

Would it be a recruiting violation if we sent free copies of every one of Lou Roe's games to Cady and Tyler in the off season?
Also, Harbo kindly sent me a box of UMass tapes over a year ago (harbo, if you're reading, let me know if you want them back). If harbo is cool with it, we can add these to the collection. Arkansas is on there. And that might be the greatest game ever. _________________ Muck Fax Page |

Update from the technical side of things..
I've ordered a used VCR, a Pansonic AG-1980. Of course it is used, but its S-VHS and is a professional unit with circuitry that improves the video signal.
I inventoried all my tech stuff last night and I will take a photo of it once we have it setup. But here is what I have
Panasonic AG-1980 S-VHS VCR
Canopus ADVC-300 Digital converter (will hook up to the VCR)
Sony Mini DV Camcorder with Firewire Digital out
Sony 8mm & hi8 Camcorder with Firewire Digital out
Canon HD Video (DV tape) with Firewire Digital out
I will do a proof of concept clip once I have everything hooked up. |

Slightly off topic but close enough....
If anyone has still digital pictures that include Sam or Dan from 96-2000 that they could email please PM me. This was just before digital cameras were a big hit and looking back I wish we had taken more pictures. I had an amazing time meeting so many people and having thousands of pictures taken but didn't get to keep many......
Or if anyone knows how to create a shareable database on something like shutterfly and have posted there.....
Thanks in Advance!

Hey all happy to help with this.
I'm an editor/vfx artist in nyc, and I have access to a professional "rack" with pro VHS, DV/DVCAM, and DVD decks (and others we won't likely need) with TBCs and the whole deal, as well as the software (and knowhow -- time may be a concern) to do some cleanup. I also have a Digital8 (which also plays 8mm and hi-8 tapes) deck if anyone has 8mm tapes.
Sounds like UMassHockeyTalk is on it, but if anyone needs help, or if there are particularly bad tapes that need work, I may be able to help.
I also have the broadcast of the 1998 championship football game from ESPN on a DVD somewhere. I should put it on youtube or something.

Marty, I'll likely never watch those tapes again, so definitely add them to the cause. And I'll go through the other tapes I have and add them to the list.
I also have some random football games, including the elusive first several minutes of the NC game. Kole Ayi!!!! |

The new (well used/old) VCR arrived today.. a quick test to show you what can be done.. I have not tweaked any of the video settings yet either. And this is actually compressed with H.264 in an MP4 container. The AVI original has even higher quality.
Last few seconds of the end of the OT win against WV to open the Bill...
24mb file

[ignore the first few seconds where i forgot to press play on the VCR..] |
