| Subbaswamy was recommended for the position by Caret... Let's hope he doesn't screw anything up. |

That's the one candidate I was hoping they wouldn't pick. I hope there was some positive stuff about him that the press releases just didn't pick up on.
By the way, now is probably a good time to email a thank you to Chancellor Holub for the great service he has done for our university. There's a strong chance that the new chancellor will get some of the credit in the future for the upward trajectory that Holub has us on, so it'll be nice to show him that his work is appreciated. I sent my email last week and he was grateful for the show of support. |

The IMPORTANT issue of the moment is...
Will he be @ MSG tomorrow night and Thursday...? _________________ I'd tell you about my trip to the dentist, but you know the drill. |

| That is a good question?? Does anyone know if he was a supporter of Kentucky Athletics. If so and coming from schools in Big Ten, SEC, and Miami in ACC (although might have been in Big East when he was there) it might bode well for support if not active support. |

| I know that some of the posters on this board were especially unimpressed by Dr. Subbaswamy. I actually liked what he had to say in the quotes from the small blog about him. I really like that he has the chutzpah to say that some of the things that Universities get ranked by have nothing to do about the quality of education. There seems to be unanimous agreement among people who met him that he has a certain amount of charisma, and he has a reputation as a fundraiser. I think he will be able to get up to speed on the local politics pretty quickly. Out of the four, and with my limited information, he was my number one pick. |

The Provost, at any university, is the person who runs the Academic side of campus, and all Deans and faculty report to him.
I do not know the man, I know the role.
I do not think that the Provost title creates a 'general manager'. It creates a p.c. leader focused on academics, nothing wrong with that. It also means that the focus is undergrad. and graduate education, and that athletics, student life, even fund raising are second tier in focus.
For me, I would vastly prefer to see a smaller University president be the hire, as that type of person would know all the roles and balances a major University needs to have, not just academic.
In my view, his 'throw in' on working with UMass Boston is totally P.C., has nothing to do with UMASS success, and was a smart political bone to basically say, UMASS will tow the line, and know its place. And they bought it.
Underwhelming - and not a change agent - a 'go along to get along' guy.

| We certainly owe the guy a chance. As Econ implied, the things he said have to be taken in context with the audience he was speaking to. The fact that President Caret liked him enough to recommend him gives me hope that he is more innovative and ambitious than he was willing/able to advertise in such a public situation. Let's see what he's got. |

"Congrats on your appointment…
UMass hoops fans are getting ready to head to NY for the NIT semifinal tomorrow night; then Thursday for the final…
We are looking forward to seeing you there to show your support and meet some new friends of your new University…"

| Quote: | Dr. Subbaswamy,
Congratulations on your appointment as Chancellor of the University of Massachusetts. As an alum and member of the UMASS community, I look forward to seeing the direction you point our great university in.
As you are probably aware, the UMASS Men’s Basketball team is playing in the NIT Final Four tonight at Madison Square Garden in NYC. It is my hope that you will be able to make it to the pregame at Stout’s and the game and utilize this opportunity to meet members of the UMASS community and show your support for your new school.
Congrats again... I look forward to the future under your leadership, as well as seeing you this evening.
Take care! |
I resisted the urge to add in a line about not calling us "UMASS Amherst"... I figured we can have that battle another day _________________ Stop waiting for UMass to do something big and help UMass do something big. - Shades |
