Of course there should have been a hearing first. That was a mistake by UMASS, and it should be pursued.

There should not be a hearing only in the most extreme of circumstances, like someone has been arrested for murder and is incarcerated.

This is not meant to defend the miscreant, and the punishment may or not fit his actions, but no excuse on no hearing.

Now granted, this may be the one spot of craziness around the entire Lexington. The media will always focus on the extreme. But what is that group going to do during Final Four weekend?

They are going to go crazy, just like ANY college campus would.

But when UMASS does it, the world is coming to an end. Arrest everyone. Suspend everyone. Put on the riot gear. TAKE NO PRISONERS!!!!

TV news characterized it as a riot! Police used pepper spray to disperse students. Bad behavior is bad behavior.

All the Southwest students who took videos and uploaded them to youtube put "umass riot" in the title, and will do so again given the opportunity, if only to increase views. They are not victims of the media.

again, a much larger disturbance at another university is not called a riot by the AP. hell a guy was even shot in lexington last night and no mention of riots...

I was just going to post a link to that article also. It just proves the point that most places tend to have [riot resembling activity word inserted here] when their school or geographic major league sports team wins/loses a major competition. Its unfortunate that the fans engage in behavior that can lead to destructive and violent events - why can't they just enjoy the game and keep themselves under control.

Stupid is, as stupid does. In the end, UMASS kids will 'pass' on any destruction, participate, or video/pass it along. THE LAST 2- equate to getting their "15 minutes of fame".

Every college has issues. B.U. is very sensitive to their hockey players' issues with women - allegedly. When their student newspaper lampooned this behavior in the April 1st - April Fool's Day - issue - all hell broke loose.

In my view, UMASS is not the only school under the media spotlight in our state. The fact that we are about the largest, have a reputation, and could make easy viewing/reporting, works to our disadvantage.

Generally, these problems are confined to Southwest, or off campus apartments. It is, in fact, predictable. And many seem to be proud of this tradition of acting like a troglodyte.

Southwest has been made fun of for over 45 years - overcrowded, being urban on a rural campus, loud, etc. If it was dynamited and plowed under and dorms 'to scale' were built, so would most of UMASS' image problems, in my view. And way past time.

Nostalgia for stupidity is just dooming the campus to more stupidity.
