After reading that, my reaction is: eh.
The guy's whining about how A-10 schools didn't make more appearances in One Shining Moment? Really?
Bona lost their first game, and they wouldn't have even made the tourney if they didn't win the A-10. No one but Bona fans cares.
Temple underwhelmed and lost their first game. Were there any highlights in their 44 point performance?
St Louis won a game, but their style of play isn't exactly highlight reel material.
Xavier made the Sweet 16, so that was something, but X's season will be remembered more for the fight at Cincinnati in December.
Anyway, if the A-10's deal isn't good, where do other high-mid-major conferences stack up with their TV deals? The writer did almost no homework in that department. What does Mountain West get in relation to us? What does Missouri Valley get? What does C-USA get? (Those were the 3 conferences behind us in the Sagarin ratings. A-10 was #7. BCS conferences were ahead of us.) He mentioned how the CAA is going to NBC Sports Network & CSN, which sounds a lot like our deal with CBS Sports Network and the regional affiliates. And he threw in a tiny bit about the Mountain West. Eh.
Sure, we'd all like more TV exposure, but an East Coast league has to compete for timeslots with the Big (Huge) East and the ACC, then also the Big 10, SEC, and Big 12 with their Eastern/Central Time mixes. The A-10 is not about to get on the same level as those guys, let's be honest. Yeah, if we were the Mountain West or the WAC, and we didn't mind having 9pm local starts, we could get on ESPN, but we're in a crowded Eastern Time market, and what it is is what it is.
The current CBS Sports Network deal ain't bad. It ain't great, but it ain't bad. Again, what else can we do with this crowded field we're competing with? The A-10 isn't in a position to launch their own channel like the Big 10, and we're not going to push the BCS schools off their perches.
The writer also talks about the A-10 tourney moving to Brooklyn, as if that's a questionable call. Well, call me biased for being an hour's drive away from the Barclays, but I don't see why leaving Atlantic City was a bad thing.
Yes, the A-10 has work to do to replace Temple, but don't cloud the issue by whining about our TV exposure. Let's replace Temple first. No TV network wants to make a deal until they know what we can bring to the table with league membership. |

I actually think UMass can lead the way to more media exposure for the a10. Simply because Chazz is one of the most exciting players the league has ever seen. Yes, Nicholson was player of the year and Holloway was on preseason All America lists, but Chazz is way more exciting than them or anyone else in the a10. Two more years of Chazz will definitely grab the attention of the media. And Put adds another interesting dimension. I think we're gonna see a lot of UMass games on TV. _________________ Always remember that you are unique, just like everyone else. |

I agree that Chaz is a great player to watch, but he alone, or UMass collectively, is not going to be able to raise the profile of the entire league. There are 12 other teams (excluding Temple because they're leaving) out there, some (X, SLU) raise us all up, some (Fordham) drag us down.
What Chaz and company may be able to do is lift UMass directly, so maybe NESN or CSN NE will send crews to do more one-off games then they've done in the last few years. |

| Said it before, I'll say it again. Fordham is going to be a good team in the next few years. Gaston is a stud, and Tom Pecora is a very good coach. It is Duquesne that is going to drag us for the next few years. |

| I've been a UMass fan since my freshman year in 2003 and I've never seen them play on CBS. I'd like that to change next year. |

Not gonna happen (unless you're referring to the tourney(s)). Usually the CBS games are SEC during the season if I remember correctly..
I have the NFL RedZone, BigTenNet, CBSSports package so I actually enjoyed the 3 or 4 games that were on those channels this year. Not to mention my subscription to CSTV so I could watch all the games..
I think our best hope is maybe a couple games on ESPN if we are playing well. I know we have been on in the past for their "bubble" week or whatever the hell they call it.. _________________ "When I got the call, there were no negotiations, just when can I come?" -DK |

SEC and Big10 games, mostly, but since we have a contract with CBS, it is possible we could see a game or two on there if we play a big time opponent. _________________ Stop waiting for UMass to do something big and help UMass do something big. - Shades |

CBS or CBS Sports Network - remember they're different things. If you're referring to the big dog, then you're right. The big dog is going to cover the big conferences, and that does not include the A-10. We'd have a huge challenge selling any of the big networks to devote more time to us and less time to the power conferences. |

Len: Chazz is one of the most exciting players the league has ever seen
Len, my man, cmon. I LOVE Chaz's game and when it's all said and done, who knows? Maybe you'll be proven right. But EVER? That's a hugely over-the-top assertion. Lamar Odom? Marcus Camby? Eddie Jones? Cuttino Mobley? Jameer Nelson and Delonte West? Even among small guards, Chaz isn't quite yet to the place where Shawnta Rogers of Tyson Wheeler got. David West, James Posey, Tu Holloway (particularly last year). Before we anoint Chaz as one of the all-time greats in conference history, let's let him play a full three seasons. And network brass isn't going to take a UMass game over a UNC game on a random Tuesday merely because of one player alone anyway, so let's try to remain calm for a bit. _________________ Muck Fax Page |

Yes I mean the big dog. CBS College Sports Channel was actually pretty decent this past season with the CBS basketball NCAA jingle and the graphics. I could have sworn I saw Xavier and/or Temple on CBS this past season but I guess I was wrong.
I'd be ok with watching UMass on CBS in the A10 finals and the NCAA tournament. |

Seems that way, only the championship game was on full CBS.

ESPN only gave us (the A-10 as a whole) 3 games this season, only 1 of which was a conference game. (The 11/25 SLU game did get bumped to ESPN2)
We made it to ESPN2 and ESPNU a bunch of times, but only 7 were conference games.
CBS Sports Network was/is our main "national" partner. Almost everything else we got besides that is regional. |

I didn't say best or greatest, I said most exciting. I'll stand by that. There's gonna be a heck of a lot of Chazz Williams buzz next year, and it think that will translate into network broadcasts. And mark my words, because I usually have no clue what I'm talking about and am usually wrong. _________________ Always remember that you are unique, just like everyone else. |
