The headline: Let it always be remembered in the history of UMass hockey as the playoff game it really didn't lose

On what proved to be the winning goal after UMass has tied the game late in the second, BC goaltender Parker Milner iced the puck, not slowly where some UMass player could have been expected to touch it. No icing was called, and Minuteman senior T.J. Syner was hit from behind trying to get to the puck. Again, there was no call. The puck came out to defenseman Brian Dumolin, who scored from the slot with 49 seconds remaining in the second period – a major deflator since UMass had just tied the game up, and would have had the momentum going into the third.

Frankly, I’m not a fan of whining about officials, but after you’ve watched this game for 49 years as I have, you kind of make the call in your head even before the referee does. My internal first reaction was - why wasn’t that icing? Julie Robenhymer, a reporter for Hockey Buzz.com, immediately turned to me, and said - “That was icing.”

Or as Cahoon declared in his emotional speech after the game, if it wasn’t icing, it was hitting from behind, and if it wasn’t hitting from behind than it was embellishment on Syner’s part.

On the missed icing, UMass hockey color man Brock Hines immediately screamed out on his call – “They blew it.”

Naturally Cahoon was all over the officials at the end of the period, and when he confronted one of them at the start of the third, the official just laughed in his face.

I didn't see game 2, but I thought the refs screwed UMass in game 1 when they disallowed the goal.

I've known Dick since we were kids....he knows his stuff,

He rarely uses officiating as an excuse. I've read his articles for a long time and he actually "hates" those that regularly do. His column speaks volumes and is accurate.

I am not saying we can't be on their level in the future but at this point we are not there.

As for the inconsistency since 2000, I'd take that over consistently being terrible every year before 2000.

Sharks:
For a lot of us, almost 20 years is now the future.

After the 93-94 non conference year, we went:

8/9 play in win then loss
8th
7th
missed
7th
8th

Since 2000:

missed
missed
6th then to Garden
3rd (thank you Lowell for the forfeit wins)
8th
8th
4th NCAA
8th
7th
7th
8th
8th

If you will take 1 NCAA appearance every 12 years, you can. With the top notch facility we have and being the flagship State school and also being in a hockey hotbed, I have higher expectations. Sorry.

^Re: The game winning goal.

It was definitely icing. I said it right away to Bullmoose and Rocks. The Section U people pointed out the non-call on the penalty, but I was baffled about the non-icing call. It was blatently obvious.

Yeah, screw all the misguided arrogant pricks. But congrats to York and the small percentage of good BC folks.
