Same team with the best record in the majors from May through August last year. 4 months of best in baseball, immediately followed by 2 months of putridity.
I'm on the long list of people that find Valentine pompous and annoying, but he has little to do with what's going on right now. Baseball managers, especially American Leaguers, have little effect on games. This team just isn't together. If they suddenly click, great. I don't expect them to. And if they don't, I hope they blow it the hell up at the trade deadline. Not a likable bunch right now.

^ Please take this discussion about the unlikable bunch over to the 'Red Sox Baseball 2012' thread.
If one doesn't exist...start one.
Meanwhile Derek Jeter is 4-4 so far tonight! _________________ "Win without boasting, lose without crying." -- Julius Erving |

Jeter has been as impressive as the Yankees starting pitchers have been unimpressive. _________________ "Win without boasting, lose without crying." -- Julius Erving |

Hey Chris...looks like you're right. The other Yankee fans on this board don't have anything to say so I'm....

That thing about a possible career ending knee injury occurring while shagging fly balls before the game was unexpected.
Hope Mariano is OK! ...and I mean OK both personally and professionally. There's not a classier guy is all of sports IMHO. _________________ "Win without boasting, lose without crying." -- Julius Erving

That was horrible. Hate to see him go out this way, if it's over.
So many Yankee fans (not you, LS) are going to have a rude awakening when they deal with life after Mariano. They don't know what it's like to be like most every other team, who go into each season hoping they have someone to close out games. The Yankees have been playing with a HUGE advantage for as long as many young fans have been fans.
Besides the payroll, I mean. |

Obvioulsy, I know he couldn't go on forever...it just felt that way because over the course of his career he managed to avoid serious injury.
If you saw the Sunday conversation on Sportscenter earlier this season, you know how lucky the Yankees got when he sort of developed that cutter on his own...almost by accident. It took him a while to gain command over the movement of that pitch.
So it goes....I just wish him a speedy and a complete recovery. If he's able to come back and pitch, great. If not I'm happy to have been able to see him play.
Suspend the 5 year rule and put him in the Hall the day that he says it's over. _________________ "Win without boasting, lose without crying." -- Julius Erving |

There are worse end of game situations than Soriano and Robertson, just sayin'. |

| I saw Mariano pitch for the then Albany-Colonie Yankees in Double A. He threw a complete game 1 hitter, the one hit was a seeing eye dribbler between the short stop and third baseman. I was probably 10-12 at the time and kept score. I wish i still had that scorecard. |

Yes there are. Short term, I think they'll be okay.
But even short term, they aren't Riviera. And long term, they'll be just like everyone else, cycling through human closers every few years. |

Yankees are in last place. Kuroda, as I expected, is marginal at best in the AL. When will these teams learn that there is a big difference between dominating the horrendous NL West with its HUGE ballparks, and trying to compete in the AL East? He's decent, but not a real difference maker on this side of the tracks.
The rotation just isn't anything near what they thought it would be. They need Robertson back healthy, and they need Texeira to hit. Jeter will level off, and ARod has officially entered the PED-induced decline. Enjoy his contract over the next 5+ years.....
Season is 25% over and the Sox and Yanks have identical records.
* Yanks are in last place due to Boston's better RPI. |

That's because the Yanks are having trouble scheduling games against high RPI teams. |
