Nice little 15 minute or so interview with Jack Arute (who evidently lives in Westfield) and former Colorado (and Boise State) Coach Dan Hawkins. Lots of questions about selling the school and the campus to recruits, Arute kept raving about the undiscovered gem of a campus and how great it's potential is from a football standpoint. Talked a bunch about using Foxboro as a home, negatives about how far it is from campus but postiives of such a big league facility.

Best part to me was when they asked him specifics about the team and players. He seemed very confident in QB Kellen Pagel and again raved about his offensive line. Said this is his 5th Mac school and it's rare to find 5 guys that can be big time linemen and he thinks he has 7 at UMass!! Mentioned Q Sales and Nick Speller in particular as players he would have recruited and loved to have had at Notre Dame or Cincinnatti. On defense he mentioned the two safeties Thellin and Birt as players that could play for any BCS school.

Arute definitely came across as a guy who is going to help spread the word for us, even offered his help in any way to Coach. We all know we can use some media memebers on our side that's for sure.

Jack Arute is a local guy. If I can remember correctly he/his family ownes/owned Stafford Springs (CT) Speedway from way back that I can remember. If I remember correctly he started his broadcasting career there announcing the races. It is a long long time since I attended a race there.

Coach is going to be on at 2pm today on the college sports network Talking about the plans for recognizing the marathon runners etc during the spring game. Channel 91 for those that have it, I'll post a recap for those that are interested if anything good comes out of it.

I'm honestly looking for a little break from the important news, for 10 minutes at least.

Jack Arute who lives in Western Mass and Gino Toretta interviewed coach. Spent most of the interview talking about the events planned for tomorrow as well as the impact on the kids who are all part of the Bay State community. Coach said numerous players have come to him asking what they can do to give back and help. Talked about special jerseys some will wear tomorrow as a just a small sign to honor the victims. Looks like right now they have a dozen or so runners who they are going to honor at halftime by letting them finish the race.

Arute asked about the impact from a coaching standpoint with focus and preparation etc and coach said that they went thru a very similar thing last year with Hurricane Sandy which affected a lot of their players who are from NY, NJ etc. Said some recruits and commits and parents might not be able to attend tomorrow's game because flights etc have been cancelled.

Referenced the conversation they had last year on the program about putting UMass football on the radar of sports fans in the Bay State and coach said he thinks they are making some good progress. Wants UMass to be like Ohio State or Penn State and be the flagship football program in the state and he has his #MadeinMass program where his goal is to be playing in a bowl game within 5 years and have at least 50% of the starters be from Massachusetts. Arute asked if there are enough good players in the state for that and Molnar said "just enough. There are some other schools who are going to come in and grab some kids but our goal is to get the rest and if we do that there are just enough good players to meet that number"

All in all, real solid interview and discussion of a great event planned for tomorrow.

Forgot to mention how Molnar gave props to the UMass doctor who was right there helping out at the bombings and how it hit close to home for the program.

As much as we bang on the UMass athletic department from time to time, they hit a home run with Coach Molnar. And I don't even really care if he is a good X's and O's coach. I assume he is, because of his pedigree but it doesn't really matter at this stage of UMass FBS football.

Observing from afar, he always seems to do or say the right thing, and I think it is really genuine. Very impressive guy and leader. I would send my kid to play for him in a heartbeat.

^ So how is Bowden not ranked lower than our guy? My feeling is once the poll gets below a certain rank it is just name recognition.
