| Well, if nothing else, it seems potentially good for UMass in that it could level the playing field against the lesser "power conference" programs. On the other hand, powerhouse programs like Alabama are probably going to be unaffected. |

In my opinion, the two biggest negatives of upgrading to the MAC were losing local rivals and losing the playoff system.
However, our local rivals (BU, NU, Hofstra, URI) are all quitting on us anyway.
Now we might get a playoff too?
This is awesome. _________________ I wish Hockey East was an all-sports conference. |

That's a very optimistic "might". Sounds like the most they'll do is have a four-team playoff (which does, for the most part, eliminate the debate about who is really #1). UMass is not going to be one of the top 4 teams in the country any time in the next couple of decades. |

Next couple of decades? Really? 20-30 years? What did your crystal ball tell you about Boise State back in 2000? Did it say decades away or that twice (maybe even 3 times) in the next 10 years they would have been competing for a National Championshp if there was a playoff system?
If your moniker is correct than you are the same age as me and lived thru the Ron Gerlufson era. No one who lived through those moribund times could have forseen what happened so quickly with our hoops team. And yes football is a much different sport and because of the amount of players needed much harder to improve quickly but to say decades is crazy. If we are not in bowl games by the end of this decade then we are doing something wrong. _________________ UMass '87 |

| Hold on now. There's a huge difference between playing in some low-level bowl and being a top four team in the country. I'm sure we'll find our way to one of those bowl games in the not-so-distant future. |

If this report is accurate, it's pretty shocking: http://www.dailycampus.com/news/schools-lose-out-at-bcs-1.2859317?pagereq=1
"Specifically, the investigation revealed the following information.
Schools that participated in the BCS between 2010 and 2012 lost close to $130,000 on average. If you factor in the cost of unsold tickets that conferences bought up, that number jumps to over $400,000.
The last three national champions all lost money. In 2010, Alabama lost $1.86 million at the BCS National Championship game. In 2011, Auburn lost $614,106, and this past year, Alabama lost $1.9 million.[
Out of all the teams who played in the BCS over the past three years, no team sold out its allotment of tickets. Even at the 2012 BCS National Championship game in New Orleans, neither Louisiana State University nor Alabama sold out their tickets, despite the fact that the game was played a short drive from each school’s campus."

If this happens, it's probable that it's just the first step. The 1-AA playoffs started with four teams as well. Now it's up to 20.
The basketball tournament, men's hockey tournament and 1-AA playoffs have all expanded since the 90s. I'd be shocked if a 1-A playoff stayed at four teams for very long. _________________ I wish Hockey East was an all-sports conference. |

Excellent point. Now I get the optimism. |

I agree, this 4 team "tourney" is a major step for these guys, finally the door opens up a crack. It's like a monk coming out of the mountains of Tibet and cracking a Bud Light. Basically a miracle. But the next thing you know the monk has a needle in his arm and we will have a nice 16 team "normal" playoff!!! _________________ UMass '87 |

Doing it in basketball is FAR easier than doing it in football. I will be disappointed (and somewhat surprised) if UMass is not in a bowl game in the next ten years. As Photoman points out - a bowl participant and a top 4 team are VERY different things. On the other hand, JJMC85 makes a very good point and getting to the NC may be a whole lot easier in ten years.
top 4 teams:
98 UT, FSU, Kansas State, Ohio State
99 FSU, VaTech, Nevraska, Alabama
00 Oklahoma, FSU, Miami, Washington
01 Miami, Nebraska, Colorado, Oregon
02 Miami, Ohio State, Georgia, USC
03 Oklahoma, LSU, USC, Michigan
04 USC, Oklahoma, Auburn, Texas
05 USC, Texas, Penn State, Ohio State
06 Ohio State, Florida, Michigan, LSU
07 Ohio State, LSU, VaTech, Oklahoma
08 Oklahoma, Florida, Texas, Alabama
09 Alabama, Texas, Cincinnati, TCU
10 Auburn, Oregon, TCU, Stanford
11 LSU, Alabama, Oklahoma State, Stanford
TCU is the only non-BCS team to end up BCS top 4 in the past 13 seasons and they were undefeated both seasons. Boise State made it to number 6 in 09 even though they went 13-0 and Florida, at 12-1, was #5 (the top 4 were also undefeated)
There are 5 BCS bowl games and there have only been six appearances by four teams from non-AQ conferences (that's out of 130 possible apearances).
The only likely consequence of getting rid of the AQ is that the ACC will frequently not get into a BCS bowl. |
