| Overall, it is a great pickup. VCU forms a natural rivalry with Richmond that may become one of the most heated and fun to watch rivalry games in the country. Even without Shaka, the Rams have a great resume and should be able to attract high quality recruits to a blossoming and upward trending program. |

This is very exciting. Hard to imagine this not increasing the a-10's national coverage over the next two years considering how much ESPN loves Smart and Stevens.

And it looks like George Mason's new-found loyalty for the CAA might have had a little more to do with:

I wonder if this GM addition might still happen after June 1 or if CAA might have pressured things. I don't think the CAA exodus is over as GMU and ODU are pretty attractive additions.
I'd take both of them in a heart beat if I was A10 commish.
Now what I'd really like to see is Butler and VCU move in 2013 to face defending A10 Champs UMass.

| We just added two teams who were in the past Final Four.. the A-10 is definitely becoming a powerhouse basketball conference. I'm loving it. |

George Mason is a good basketball school with a great coach, Drexel is still a really good basketball program and Northeastern is growing with better inner city recruits.. I think they will be fine and keep the reputation they have always had. |

I love the addition of Butler and VCU. Two high profile teams with great young coaches that play tempos which are fun to watch and make great games that have brought success to both teams in recent years.
Does anyone think this changes the way the A-10 will be perceived, which has sat on the fence between being a high "mid-major" and a "major" over the years?
And will it mean that the A-10 ends up still sending 3-4 teams to the Dance, or does that number expand to 4-5? |

This solidifies the A10 standing nationally. We're 1/2 step behind the six BCS conferences and ahead of every other conference IMO.
Fantastic aggressive, proactive move by the A10

A-10 was arguably better than the PAC-12 this past year. Adding two quality programs to replace one quality program and one middling one is a profitable move. I find it hard to argue against considering the A-10 a "major" conference.
But, the league's representation in the NCAA will continue to be contingent on the quality of opponents that try to schedule our teams in OOC play. That is until we get to a point where we have strong teams from the top down. |

UMass has gotten a lot better, and now the A10 is becoming a very very strong basketball conference. Winning the A10 is going be a serious achievement year in and year out now.

I just hope we'll have Smart and Stevens in the A-10 for a couple of years before they finally take an offer from a bigger school. You gotta wonder how long they'll maintain the loyalty they've demonstrated thus far. |

I guess you never heard of Sonny Smith, Jeff Capel and Anthony Grant, eh? |
Sonny Smith won a very impressive ONE CAA championship in his career at VCU.
Under Jeff Capel VCU made the NCAA tourney once in 4 years and lost that opening round game.
Under Anthony Grant they made the tourney twice in his 3 years, winning one game.
You don't think Shaka Smart's resume (5-2 NCAA record, Final Four) is better than those guys?
