UMass rolls in series opener against GW, 10-3.
It's still pretty complicated, and UMass still can finish tied with any combination of Fordham, Richmond and/or Xavier in a fight for playoff spots (St. Joe's is playing one less game because of a ppd.). I took a quick glance and I think the tiebreakers really favor UMass against any of those teams as long as it wins one of the remaining two games against GW.
Win the last two and the Minutemen are in for sure ... no way that more than two of Richmond-Fordham and St. Joe's-Xavier can get to 14 wins since they are playing each other this weekend.
Dayton's win eliminated any chance of getting a bye in the first round. _________________ I wrote this ... it's gotta be true. |

UMass wins Game 2, 6-3, behind another strong performance from Joe Popielarczyk. He gave up a three-run HR in the top of the third, but the Minutemen rallied from a 3-1 deficit.
I believe that clinches a spot, based on the tiebreakers I was poring over last night. But I will figure things out closer once the SJ-Xavier and Fordham-Richmond games are over. _________________ I wrote this ... it's gotta be true. |

At this precise second, the hopefuls for the 6 team tournament are:
1. St. Louis 17-7 - season finished, has H2H over Dayton
2. Dayton 15-7 - at La Salle x2
3. URI 14-8 - at Temple x2
4. St.Joes 13-9 - at Xavier
5. UMass 13-10 - vs. GW
6. Richmond 12-10 - vs. Fordham x2
7. Fordham 12-10 - at Richmond x2
8. Xavier 12-11 - vs. St.Joes
Richmond is currently beating Fordham 7-1 in the 4th inning.
URI is beating Temple 5-1 in the 5th.
If head-to-head matters, UMass won the series with Fordham and Richmond, lost the series with St. Joes, and did not play Xavier or URI. Xavier also won their series with Fordham and Richmond, so it may get tricky if UMass loses and Xavier wins.
Or does that matter at all, Dickie? |

As I mentioned earlier, I believe UMass has clinched a spot.
Here's what I have:
UMass beats GW (finishes 14-10): Clinches a spot ... Xavier and Fordham can't get to 14 wins
UMass loses to GW (finishes 13-11):
a. St. Joe's/Richmond win: SJ is 14-9; UR 14-10; X and F 12-12 ... SJ/RU/UM get last three spots
b. St. Joe's/Fordham win: SJ is 14-9; UM/UR/FU all 13-11 ... UMass is 4-2 head-to-head among the three; Richmond 3-3, Fordham 2-4
c. Xavier/Richmond win: UR is 14-10; SJ 13-10; UM/X 13-11 ... UMass and Xavier did not play ... common opponents were LaSalle (UM 3-0, X 2-1), Saint Louis (UM 2-1, X 1-2), GW (UM 2-1, X 1-2), SJ (UM 1-2, X 2-1) ... UMass would be 8-4, Xavier 6-6
d. Xavier/Fordham win: SJ is 13-10; UM/X/UR/FU all 13-11 ... head-to-head doesn't apply ... only common opponent for all four was LaSalle (UMass 3-0, other three were 2-1)
St. Joseph's also appears to have clinched, leaving one spot between Xavier, Richmond and Fordham.
---
As far as seeding, Rhode Island winning means UMass can't finish third. Looks like UMass would be fourth if it wins Saturday and St. Joe's loses (they can't finish tied, since SJ played one less game); otherwise UMass is fifth. I'm guessing they would win any tiebreaker for sixth based on the above. _________________ I wrote this ... it's gotta be true. |

Beat GW anyway. 11-1.
4th is a good spot. If we win the first game, that means a second round game against Saint Louis, from whom we took 2 out of 3, as opposed to Dayton, who swept us.
This should be an interesting A10 tournament, given the parity among the top 6 teams. |
