Lax mafia really enjoying this. I've tried to avoid the mafia's comments as it just gets me all fired up, but saw this one.....Quint had a column on Inside Lacrosse where he commented on each team/game from this past weekend. For all other games he provides at least a paragraph for each team with key moments from the game, his thoughts, etc.....for UMass, not so much:

Quote:
UMass
Undefeated no more. All of their achievements will be scrutinized and adjusted for strength of schedule. Their defense crumbled at crunch time. Eleven seniors will be difficult to replace.

What a jerk. Sure reads like he is trying to discredit the entire season to me. These kids have nothing to be ashamed of. Undefeated regular season, CAA Champs, and the first UMass team to be #1 in the polls is pretty darn good. Disappointing ending for sure, but this seems a bit over the top.

What did he write that is so wrong or offensive? Sounds like he is right on the money to me. I hate to read that stuff, but I think it accurately reflects what happened.

"Put up, or Shut up" - we need to Shut Up. For second straight year, a disappointing home loss. CAA final to Delaware last year, Colgate first round to Colgate.

While I am all for physical Lax, many dumb penalties led to too many man downs, which they often converted.

Next year - a rebuilding year for UMASS.

CAA - a conference to stay in? Arguable. However, ECAC has expensive road trips (Denver and Air Force). Big East? If you think that the BE 'powers' will allow UMASS even a toehold into that conference, without inviting Football/and or Basketball to the conference, I would like to smoke what you have. No way.

In my view, CAA is fine, with 3 quality OOC opponents added , perhaps including ECAC teams like Loyola and Denver - home and home. And addding another quality Ivy, such as Princeton or Cornell (which missed Rob Pannell greatly)

Why is everyone so quick to call next year a rebuilding one? We return one of the best players in America, 3 of our top 4 goal scorers, and a handful of solid middies and long poles. Kell and McCormack will be tough to replace, but this team has a ton of talent coming back and Cannella always gets a lot out of guys who might not have been studs the previous season. Finding a good goalie is obviously huge, but I think this team could be really, really good.

Perhaps its just the smirk I envision on his face when he is writing this. Just bothers me that every other team gets a "thoughtful" analysis of their game, and we get a brief one-liner which basically says I told you so. I also don't believe that all accomplishments of this team need to be questioned or re-evaluated. That isn't fair to the kids who had a great season.

I may be over-sensitive....too many years of listening to this nonsense (and the fact that I have Hopkins fans in my family....)

I know that we've added UNC for next year......per an article by MTV......so that's one quality OOC game.

Was at this game because happily it was the day after commencement. Unhappily, they lost despite the feeling that they were in control most of the game. Colgate went on a nice run at the end. But getting a shafted seed, they probably would suffered the same fate traveling to Duke... who got handled by Maryland (that was nice to watch Smile... who got handled by Loyola...

If you think finding a replacement for McCormack is going to be easy, you're CRAZY!!! He was lights out this year. Goodhue has been decent when thrown in to games in garbage time and I know that we have a highly rated kid from Strong Island coming in, or already on the team, but to find a backstop that's going to measure up to Tim is the main reason we are in are going to be rebuilding next year. Sure, we bring back Manny but Kell is gone and so is Cellantani (spelling??) I believe.

Zach Oliveri is a redshirt freshman and has the potential to step right into that role. He was on Team USA in the U-19 world championships last year. And there still is Goodhue, who has looked good in his limited chances and might be ready for a bigger role.

As for the rest of the team, the sky is not falling in my world. Midfield seems to be the place UMass takes the biggest hit:

ATTACK: Manny and K. Smith return; Kell gone, Whiteway ready to step in?

MIDFIELD: Fleming, Mooney and Tyler return; Biscardi, D'Amario, Rushing, Fetterly gone; ... will need to find some depth here ... Lynott, Cleary, maybe Izzo can be used more on offense

DEFENSE: J. Smith returns; Celentani and Anderson gone; long-stick midfielders Hollenbaugh and Tobin also are back, could see more out of Fahey next season

In short, UMass returns three of its top four scorers and five of the nine who cracked double digits in points. Shore up the defensive end and things should be fine. You know the rest of the lax world will be overlooking the Gorillas again.

Forgot to add that faceoffs are a big concern for me, losing Toresco and Rushing. Calvello is back, but he was sub .500 as the third guy in the rotation.

(Then again, I never thought I'd see a team win a national title after going 4-for-29 on faceoffs on the weekend.)

Don't know much about any of the incoming recruits other than Hunziker, but I haven't seen any of them rated too highly. No surprise, since the under-the-radar, lunchpail types are our specialty.
