Great job by Jets GM Mike Tannenbaum ('91) in getting Santonio Holmes for a 5th rd pick. Excellent negotiation by the Umie. Wow.

You gotta be kiddin'! One report said that he was going to be released as a perennial bad apple until the Jets tossed them the draft pick.

On top of the fact that he's suspended for the first 4 games of this coming season for being a shit-for-brains.

Getting one of the best WRs in the NFL for a 5th rd pick is highway robbery.

No its not. The Steelers were prepared to CUT him. Off the field this guy is a total ass, and that is why nobody was even willing to give up a 4th rounder. How many more women does he have to assault before you stop calling this some kind of amazing deal?

Brandon Marshall was acquired for TWO 2d rd picks and he has assaulted numerous women.

Getting Holmes for ONE 5th rd pick is an excellent job by Tannenbaum.

Holmes has had a few scrapes w/the law but nothing too serious by NFL stds. Marshall has a far longer track record of assault incidents and the phins just handed him a 48M contract.

^
Marshall was arrested ONCE for suspicion of domestic violence, in which he got in an argument with his girlfriend, then prevented the taxi she was in from leaving. But hey, apparently that's assaulting "numerous" women.

Holmes was arrested once for domestic violence and assault, the same number of times as Marshall...but since he's now a Jet, that's "nothing too serious by NFL standards"??

Minute:

Marshall has had multiple run ins for domestic violence. the cops were coming to his house in denver repeatedly for fights and arguments - i think it was something like 11 - 12 visits in 2 yrs. He's also had a dui arrest, disorderly conduct arrests, and i think he just had a domestic violence arrest a yr ago. Typically with stars like brandon the charges get dropped b/c the victims decide its in their best interests to not cooperate. This perpetuates the cycles of abuse and violence which can spiral out of control.

He is good at catching a football though.

Right, because he has only been accused of assaulting a woman on 2 occasions. Rolling Eyes

I understand that disorderly conduct and marijuana possession are not serious crimes, but on top of the other accusations it speaks volumes about what kind of total jackass this guy is and why the Steelers (and almost all other teams) don't want to deal with him.

I hate a cycle of abuse just as much as the next person.
Hey Jack, Now its time for you to insert your foot into your mouth...or maybe your ass because that's where you seem to be talking from on this topic

On March 24, 2010, Anshonae Mills filed a lawsuit against Holmes over a March 7 incident in which she alleges Holmes threw a glass at her in an Orlando nightclub, resulting in a cut above her eye. Initially, Mills did not pursue charges, claiming Holmes and the police intimidated her into it, but the case has been reopened

Nothing like some good old intimidation to perpetuate the cycles of abuse and violence which as you know can spiral out of control!

Berty despite what you & I may think. throwing a glass at a girl is not that serious of an infraction by NFL stds. the NFL allows nutjobs, rapists, people w/weapons charges, dog murders' and serial abusers and brawlers to play in the league. Yes - Holmes has a history of a few scrapes with the law, but nothing major by NFL stds. He probably acts like a jerk, but he's also a very talented football player nearing his prime playing years.

He's also a former 1st rd pick in 2006 and and Super Bowl MVP playing in a contract year. Getting that kind of talent for a 5th rd pick is an excellent move by Tannenbaum who is a Massachusetts Alum and who is doing good work w/the Jets. It will be interesting if Tannenbaum drafts Ducasse.

If you think Holmes sucks or something - feel free to tell me who in the 5th Rd is as good a football player as Santonio Holmes is.

It's funny how people are so quick to bite on these stories that come out afterwards. It's called spin. Pitt was not going to cut Holmes. They were hoping to get X in return and had to lower their price to an eventual 5th round pick. When they did trade him, they put a spin that they were prepared to cut him. Why? Because it's in their best interest to do so.

exactly. in NFL parlance "ready to cut him" means he isn't gonna be cut and of course Pittsburgh would have been idiotic to cut Holmes - a SB MVP and one of the best young WRs in the NFL. The Jets also had a need to improve their receiving corps in order for them to reach the SB - so they addressed their need and they gave up a 5th round pick. It was an excellent move by Mr. Tannenbaum.

Jack thanks for bringing some original thought to the discussion. Watch out Quinn it sounds like you have an echo in here.

Asking price has nothing to do with this. Actual value does. The best he is worth in the NFL is a 5th round pick. That is a FACT not an opinion.

If the team is willing to give up such a great talent (your words not mine) for a 5th round pick (a round that is a complete crapshoot), the team has clearly made the decision that they are parting with the player no matter what the return (if any) is. Maybe the Cincinnati Bengals would put the spin on after this type a trade, but the Rooney Family is a good group of people and they decided Holmes was a detriment to their organization. A 5th round pick is next to nothing (your comments seem to back up that opinion)...so Why would they be so opposed to letting him go for nothing?
