This looks to me like a great get. He held his own as a freshman pg against some pretty good teams (Kansas, Charlotte) as well as in the CAA. Can't say that about too many frosh pg's. Anyway, this fills a real need. I would otherwise be feeling a little uncomfortable with only one real pg on the team in 2 seasons. Plus, he and DT should push each other in practice and make each other better. Good pickup.

Xavier, Temple, Richmond v. ODU, Northeastern, William&Mary? That's lateral?

No, but Xavier is the anomaly. The rest of the leagues are not that far apart. I just wouldn't call it a HUGE step up, that's all.

we did play some better teams.. but if u take his numbers from last year he would have been 4th in rebounds a game, 3rd in scoring, 1st in assists a game, 1st in 3pt fg %. for us over the course of a season... not bad for a frosh. were going to need multiple guys at the point if we want to be any good in a few years when all these guys are jr's and sr's.

In two years the players on scholarship will be:

Traynham, C. Williams, Riley, Morgan, Sa. Carter, Vinson, Putney, Laury, Farrell, Hill, Se. Carter, and Esho.

That's 12 players. Am I correct in that we would have 1 scholarship remaining for the 2011 crop of players? Granted things will no doubt change in two years, but...

If DK doesn't pull in a big man with that 1 scholarship I would be very disappointed. Someone like Canty would seem to fit well in a complementary role with the roster above.

Well, that settles it - we're going small, fast, and pesky at point. I'm concerned about how we'll fare defensively against big guards but one thing this definitely does is give the team a very clear identity at point and should allow Farrell to focus more on developing his game on the wing. I was never too thrilled with the idea of him trying to develop into a PG - I'd rather see him at SF.

I can tell you this - If DT puts up the same numbers as Williams did last year, I'll be very happy and I think most on here would be too. Having two guys with similar experience that are capable of starting is excellent, too. They'll push each other to get better and they'll be able to stay fresh by splitting time if they both prove to be good enough.

My gut tells me that two years from now, we're all going to be glad we got this kid. He sounds at least as promising as DT and in some respects, more so since he's already shown solid D1 skills. Say what you want about the CAA but I think it's a good league and his numbers are very good for a freshman.

Welcome aboard, Chaz!

I can't see this as a "huge" pick up. The kid put up some decent numbers in the CAA, but not great. It's good to have some depth at the position, and a guy with Div 1 experience, but IMHO it's more of a huge step up for him than a huge pick up for us, CAA to A10. I don't like it from a chemistry point of view.

What are you worried about chemistry for? Every team needs two point guards to push each other. Plus they'll probably bond better with Williams sitting out a year and they'll probably relate well to each other, having overcome the same height "disadvantage". Plus, he already knows Morgan and said he's excited about the DDM.

I don't see any chemistry concerns here at all.

I'm gonna paraphrase Chris20:

He's 5'9" and averaged 4.3 rebounds as a freshman.

that's enogh for me.

I just went back and re-read this thread. At this point it is more relevent than the DT suspended thread. All the worries about 2 small point guards for next year is out the window. The big worry is who the second point guard is. At the beginning of this season, I thought GC would be getting 25 minutes per game over the season, and DT would get the luxury of being brought along slowly. Next season, Chaz will need to step in from day one. Some guys don't need instruction on the bench as much as others, we can only hope Chaz doesn't need any.

The biggest difference between dt and chaz , chaz has major ups, can finish more in traffic and helkp out rebounding ala rondo.

Anyone listen to the DK radio show... I guess Chaz was on it with him and I was wondering how it went.

This confused me... UMassathletics.com says the radio show is on Thursday, even though it has been on Mondays all season.

Sounded very mature. Looking forward to seeing him play next year - just wish he could get on the court for us this year. DK said there have been a few times that Chaz has played on the second team during practice and he said he played so well that he wasn't sure if the team was ready for the next game. . .probably because he schooled GC.

DK also didn't sound thrilled about GC's shot. He said he didn't want to call a time-out because he didn't want to ruin our flow, and had confidence in his senior point guard -- but he basically said that if GC is going to take that shot he has to make it or else make the extra pass to Freddie or drive to the hole. I agree with him. . .not sure I agree on not calling a TO to set up a play, but nevertheless. Would be great to have Chaz out there right now, but think he will be just the guy we need to run the offense. It's been a while since we had a true PG.

Hopefully these two losses kicked these guys in the a$$ and made them realize they can't be good without going at it 100% at all times.

Recycling this thread...

Saw a pic of the team lineup today:
http://twitpic.com/6hk62z
Look at the height on Chaz!

Got me thinking though: if Shawnta Rogers can be the A-10 player of the year, at 5'4", what's to stop Chaz from achieving great success, even if he's not the roster-listed 5'9"?

Would be nice!
