What was "CBS 3 Weather Now", on Comcast channel 293 in WMass, is going to become "CBS 3 Now", and will start carrying a lot of UMass games, across several sports, including football.

Sports covered:
Football
Soccer (W and M)
Field Hockey
Hockey
Basketball (W and M)
Lacrosse

This sounds like a great idea. UMass was already broadcasting these games over the Internet; now they will simulcast the feed through CBS Now. It's not like it will cost UMass much, and they get an opportunity for residents of the Valley to see more UMass athletic contests in a variety of sports. Excellent.

Additionally, it's a better use of a channel for CBS 3. I never understood why CBS 3 wanted a continuous loop of their weather broadcast; the Weather Channel does the same thing on Comcast on 245.

It looks like a cable-only setup. With the "modern" digital signals, though, they could broadcast this over the air. One of the reasons the FCC made the switch was so TV channels could broadcast sub-channels. Then again, I could be mistaken.

CBS 3 would have to be nuts not to try to get it onto cable boxes in EMass - time to write Comcast...

Wondering how that will play out given it would technically be competing with UMass All-Access.

Here is what the CBS3 website says, so I guess those of us who pay for CBS All Access will be able to see all of these games:

The broadcasts will be produced and directed through the UMass Athletic Media Relations Office and will be a simulcast of the CBS College Sports All-Access feed.

I really, really, really hope they've figured out how to send a signal that isn't interrupted with scoreboard graphics. People may be confused when their television urges them to "Make Some Noise" in their living rooms.

I'm also surprised that they can do this without violating their conference television contracts. Remember last year that we couldn't even use PBS to broadcast our conference tournament basketball games. There must be a pretty broad carve-out for internet streams that allows CBS3 to re-broadcast directly from it.

I hope this arrangement is successful. If it is, it may get the Champions Center project accelerated, since that's supposed to have dedicated television broadcasting facilities.

This is no different than COX broadcasting most of the URI games. As long as they don't broadcast games that are being done by someone else they're fine.

The next challenge for CBS3 and UMass is to get people to actually find the channel. Smile
