| Not a bad read, although I question any analysis that doesn't say Greg Landry was the greatest QB in UMass history. If any of you young'uns had seen him play, you'd agree with me. |

Never had the chance to see him play, but the way Bankhead ran the whiplash offense I think he was the best QB UMass has seen in the last 20 years.... _________________ UConn girls are........................... Huskies!! |

And I do not believe they have any spectator seats on the field... just the standing room on the side and the stands. Seems odd to me.

There was spectator seating on the field from approximately where the southern 20-yard line is and back. |

I think all those high school band members really were sitting in the stadium... I stuck around a bit after the game; when the crowd started to mosey out, there was all this chanting going on with the bands in the stands. There's a chance they did come in after, but it seemed like they were in there the whole time or the second half at least. |

Back to the ACC - wow, how the mighty can fall, and quickly. It is interesting how football dominates the discussion, where even profitable basketball programs cannot demand the $$'s of football, amid the conference TV money for FB.
It seems clear now that there is a real possibility that there will be 64 or so teams in some sort of Super-Elite 4 conferences, dominated by football, and perhaps even leaving the NCAA long term.
In my view, this chase for the buck is insane, as not everyone can win, and any sport can wilt due to overexposure.
What is also interesting is that these Super conferences are outside most of the major metropolitan areas of the Northeast, and perhaps beyond - Atlanta was mentioned. They are banking on viewers like me, I guess, who watch SEC football on Saturday, like I watch the NFL on Sunday, because it is the best quality, not that I have any allegiance to Alabama, Florida, etc..
It does leave me wondering about the next 70 or so 'FBS' schools - what bowls will they really compete for, what status is possible for them to attain?
We'll see.
Whatever happens, I am troubled that so many traditional rivalries are disappearing in search of 'the bucks.' Traditional rivalries are part of American culture, and their loss is just like the endless boring landscape of America, dominated by the sameness of national chains - for restaurants, hardware, department stores, etc. Yeech.
In my view, regional champions, in sports and retail, should be fostered. Sameness is boring, trivial and generic.
As the old song says, "you don't know what you have lost, until it is gone".
Whatever we had in college sports is leaving quickly, and to what end? _________________ Feeling entitled is JUST a feeling... |

^^I like your post. I guess I am in the "if you can't beat them, join them" crowd. All of the top and peer flagship state universities play FBS football, so we probably should (and do) too.
Like someone else said, I wish Hockey East was an all sports conference. |

| ^ To be nitpicky, Bob Kraft has the highest rated home stadium. If UMass moves back west expect us to be about 80+ slots lower. |

Exactly. The key is to not fail at Gillette and DON'T move back west. |

| I agree with photoman - succeed at Gillette and never move back. I don't believe the Commonwealth will ever let UMass build a real stadium. In any case, I think if we succeed at Gillette then the need to move diminishes. That said, if we succeed at Gillette then I hope we also have a hundred or so busses going from Amherst to Foxboro on game days. |
