MassLive:

Members of the Women’s and Men’s Rowing team at the University of Massachusetts at Amherst students were devastated to learn the temporary structure which housed their boats collapsed. At least seven boats valued at more than $100,000 were destroyed.

“It is pretty grim. You have a boat split in half and they are all collapsed inward,” said Alexandra Dimatteo, of Duxbury, a senior sports psychology major who has been on the team four years. “It looks like a splintery graveyard.”

The boats were housed in the temporary structure with hard walls and a canvas tent-like roof off Route 9 in Northampton near the Connecticut River, she said.

The structure had been there for at least 16 years. Friday students noticed there was about 4 feet of snow on top and tried knocking it down, but couldn’t reach it and could not climb on top of it, Coach James W. Dietz said.

One fortunate thing is not all the team’s boats were destroyed.

The team had just returned from winter training in Florida. Because of the snow, it could not reach the usual boat house so a trailer with some of its boats was parked inside the football stadium, he said.

“When you look at our teams with 65 to 70 women rowing and about 50 men, it will put pressure on us to keep everyone in the team boated,” Dietz said.
