From the latest UMass fundraising e-mail:
| Quote: | In Chancellor Holub’s speech this year, he told a story about a family that ran into financial problems during their student’s senior year; the student was only able to graduate due to financial help given to him by a family friend. As soon as the student was able, he attempted to pay it back. The friend refused the funds, saying, “Give the money instead to UMass Amherst so that another worthy student who lacks financial means can attend.” That graduate has been giving back ever since.
|
My response:
| Quote: | To whom it may concern:
I will guarantee you that the friend in question did NOT say "Give the money instead to UMass Amherst." That friend almost definitely said "Give the money instead of UMass."
I, and many of my fellow alumni are sick and tired of hearing our alma mater referred to as anything other than the flagship of the University of Massachusetts.
Not once have I ever heard the phrases "UConn Storrs," "URI Kingston," "Florida Gainesville," "Ohio State Columbus" or "Indiana Bloomington." Someone needs to explain why UMass can't be referred to as UMass, because I, for one, am sick and tired of hearing and seeing "UMass Amherst."
I won't do something as shortsighted as refuse to donate because of something like this, but it wouldn't surprise me at all if some alumni did. I seriously doubt that whatever politically correct justification there is for doing this would fly with the vast majority of UMass alumni.
Feel free to forward this whoever is responsible for this policy, because those people need to know that there are more people upset with how the school is referred to than they realize.
Thank you for your time,
Proud UMass (NOT UMass Amherst) alumnus

Good for you for penning your concern.
But I have always thought this to be a greatly overrated axe to grind.
I think there are far more important things to get excited about.
But, that's okay....I know there are many for which this is a big deal. I'm just not one of them. |

| One of the places this festered was with the hockey program and Hockey East, the league, who finally back at the beginning of this decade dropped the Amherst. |

Letter today to the Editor of UMass Alumni magazine with a copy to Chancellor Holub:
To the Editor of UMass Amherst magazine:
The use of the appellation "UMass-Amherst" to define our school has spun way out of control. I understand that the previous chancellor strongly advised that it be used - for fund raising purposes I assume.
If your magazine were to conduct a poll of alums, you would find overwhelmingly that we graduated from "UMass." Period. None of my friends graduated from UConn-Storrs or UNH-Durham.
Here's a few examples:
1. Boston Globe (06/08/09): "Madeleine Blais, a guest columnist, is a professor at Amherst-UMass"
Should we merge with Amherst College and become the MinuteJeffs or the Lordsmen?
2. A community newspaper: "a class in landscaping captured his attention so much so that he will be going on to UMass-Amherst at Stockbridge"
Maybe we have opened a branch at the western end of the Mass Pike?
3. UMass Amherst magazine (Spring 2009): Brandice Balschmiter (our truly outstanding softball pitcher): "I've known coach half my life. It was always my dream to come to UMass Amherst."
I have serious money to wager that she did not say that. The one bastion of sanity is our athletic teams, where we are branded simply and correctly as "UMass." Our athletes would not say that. I hope you did not change her quote in the name of over the top correctness.
I read the magazine cover to cover but every time I see our fabricated name, I have to take a deep breath. I think you would find that many other alums would agree. I pray that the usage is not backfiring. _________________ "Jack didn’t have any envy in him," Calipari said. "He was the greatest coach to ever coach here." |

| I love it guys. We are seriously the only large flagship state school in the entire country (that I can think of) that goes with the hyphen. The freaking UMass magazine is called "UMass Amherst"! I think I'll join you guys in writing a letter to Chancellor Holub. |

While I don't disagree with you all, I can't get myself worked up over it.
As for us being the only one I propose to you University of Alaska Fairbanks, U Colorado is often refered to U Colorado Boulder |

Part of the Campus is in Hadley...
Why not UMass - Amherst-Hadley? _________________ I'd tell you about my trip to the dentist, but you know the drill. |

My daughter goes to the University of Missouri, which is commonly referred to as "Mizzou". There are U MO campuses in other cities in the State (St Louis, Rolla, etc.) but when you say "Mizzou" everybody knows which university you are talking about.
Last semester she made the dean's. We got a letter of congratulations on University letterhead and there, printed in black and white as part of the letterhead were the words: "There's only one Mizzou". How I wish UMASS would adopt that attitude!
Let me also express my frustration that the folks at Memorial Hall are aware that there are many Alumni who feel the same way and don't give a tinker's dam. One even told me it's a "silly" argument (of course, he's not a UMASS Alum, he's an employee.) _________________ "Good times and riches and son-of-a bitches, I've seen more than I can recall"-Jimmy Buffett |

You were. You are. UMASS.
Does that mean Amherst? Or the whole system?
There is zero consistency to the branding of this university. |

| Doc, I read a story a couple years ago that this was a bone of contention at Mizzou. It was often referred to as Missouri-Columbia and all of the alumni made a big stink about it. I think the name was officially changed to the University of Missouri in the early 2000s. |

About half of my HS class ended up at CU. I have never heard even one of them refer to it as Colorado-Boulder or even CU-Boulder. |

I guess I am wrong Its just how I have heard it, but honestly not sure I know or knew anyone who went there.
What about University of California? I don't even know which campus is the "flagship". UCLA? Berkeley

TOuche! Never heard it referred to as Berkeley though? I would have thought that UCLA was the flagship.
I will shutup now.
BTW for those keeping score, I am a geographer and can name all 50 states. I'm not too proud to name all 50 in an effort to be right.
