Yesterday I was near the finish line for the Boston Marathon with my wife Debbie and son Tommy and his fiance Rachel. We were waiting for my daughter Ashley who was running for Boston's Childrens Hospital Cancer Fund and was less then 4 minutes from the finish line. What we as a family witnessed yesterday will live with us forever. We saw a tradegy that is unimaginable. Boston is a great city and I worked for years on the 45th floor of the Pru with Bob Woolf and the Copley area was like home for me.
Just remember to keep your kids close and the most important thing any of us can have is family. Give your kids a hug tonight and may God Bless Boston and all those who lost their lives and all those who suffered injuries. It's a day that will live in my mind forever and I'm so grateful that my family is here today. I told my daughter that the best thing she can do is run the Marathon next year. Never back down and let the terrorists win.

Also a good time to recognize the efforts of UM's team physician, Dr. Pierre Rouzier, who rushed to the scene to help the wounded.

Great article by Matt Vautour about it:

Tom - glad for you and the family. An incredibly benign, safe, and laid back event turned to shambles, in .5 seconds. Life is so precious.

In the last few days I have seen all the media coverage and my heart goes out to all those families affected. We have a connection to 3 individuals that lost limbs and I can't imagine what they're going through. I am a partner in 2 medical companies that have technology that saves lives and my daughter was running to fight cancer and then to see the carnage and how a human being could want to kill us is sad. We also know a lot of young runners that didn't finish and they are not doing well mentally and their parents are concerned. These sick maniacs did a lot of damage that isn't visible.
I just want to share a story that demonstrates how our young people are really good people. My daughter Ashley's three best friends came over the house Tuesday night to take Ashley out to dinner to cheer her up and when they came back I tried to get them to laugh and said "I want to see all 4 of you run next years marathon." Well I was shocked when all 4 said they wanted to run next year and 3 of them aren't runners. It made my night.
Be safe because we live in a different world and hold your family tight.

Hey, I posted this in the general discussion thread as well, but I figure more people read the basketball threads.....

My running club, the western mass distance project, will be having a fun run on Sunday to benefit the victims. It will be in Stanley Park in Westfield at 10am. Any donations made will be donated to the one fund.

Article on Mass live here:
http://www.masslive.com/news/index.ssf/2013/04/victims_of_boston_marathon_bom.html

The Umass men's and women's track teams will be there as well.

Tom, glad to hear your family made it out ok. I'm also happy to hear about all the people going to toe the line with me next year and run the race... I'm hoping the BAA gets rid of the qualifying standard for next year and opens it up to a ton of runners.

They need to limit the number of runners so they can manage the logistics and security, especially at the start of the race. They sure better beef up security measures at the start of the race next year. If you haven't watched the runners start in Hopkinton, it's like a herd of cattle stretching over miles of road, running shoulder to shoulder, stretching the full width of the road, with runners giving high fives along the fences. They pack in so tight they practically trip over each other. There are 3 waves of runners released 9000 at a time, with each group taking about 10-15 minutes just to cross the start line. This year, the last runners crossed the start line as the men's leaders were crossing into Natick. It's a site to behold but very scary to think how much damage could be done with that many runners crowded into a very confined space. And lord knows, there will be a LOT of media attention in Hopkinton next year.
