If TB can play at the level of Tyrell Lynch did in his only (freshman) year on the team - that is minus the attitude problem - it will be a good sign that he will develop into a solid A10 big. Just my opinion.

Maybe how Cady played last year would be a better comparison.

I don't have huge expectations in freshmen.

I just hope they stay healthy, stay our of trouble, and take care of business in practice and the classroom.

If it's not serious like they have said, then a full week before a game should be enough time for him to get pretty healthy. I don't think this should be a problem...knock on wood.

Hope he recovers well. Might be a good time for him to work on those free throws. That crouch scares me.

Love the intensity he showed against AIC!

I think if he looks how cady did last year during his games that would be WELL byond expectations.. I think Cady looked amazing last year.. I think comparisons to an early Sean Carter would be most fair

I still don't know who he might compare with but his free throws remind me a little of Carter.

He'll be a good player. I think next year, with a season under his belt, he will be ready to compete in the A10.

He'll contribute this year, I'm sure. But we won't really know what we have with him or Izzy for at least another year.

I'm just glad to have both those guys on our side. I was really high on Izzy before we signed him. I don't know if he will be a great player but I think he will be an important cog in the machine.

Tyler and Izzy give us a nice mix of size, strength, length and intensity. Two very different players who could really complement each other well.

I think Tyler is more of a sure thing to be a solid contributor for four years. Good kid, good size, good attitude.

I think Freeman has a much higher ceiling, but also comes with the risk that it might not ever click.

A good combination of frontcourt depth.

I haven't seen TB attempt a free throw, so you'll have to explain what it is about his free throws that are so bad. If he crouches a lot, that's not really an issue, I would worry a whole lot more if his arm mechanics were terrible, a la Sean Carter or if he didn't crouch and use his legs at all.

^
What I saw was too much body movement. He dips down, then comes up as he is releasing the ball. I think his arms and hands looked OK, but it's a little like the golf swing. You can't have too many moving parts and hit the ball squarely. Overall, it wasn't horrible and he only had 2 free throws so that's not enough of a sample size.

^ Isn't that how you're supposed to shoot free throws? You don't want a ton of bend at the knees, but you do want some and then you release the ball as you extend your legs so you're utilizing your legs, as opposed to only using your arms. I could be wrong, I haven't played basketball in about 10 years, but that's how I remember it. Smile

I saw him practicing and his shots ranged from very nice to scary bad. Granted, I've probably only seen a sample size of about 30 shots but his mechanics looked very inconsistent.

The crouch is exactly the "too many moving parts" thought that I was trying to express. He dips before and then during the shot. With your head bouncing up and down more than a foot twice per shot, I could see things getting very sloppy as he gets tired. Just my uneducated hunch. If he could pull off blind hook shots, I would be fine with it. I just think his mechanics are very strange to my eyes. He does sometimes get decent rotation and puts it up there fairly soft.

Now when you see Trey Davis shoot FTs, you will see a guy that does the exact same thing every time, with no upper body movement, and a nice soft shot with good rotation and arc. He looks like he could hit them blind folded.

Now, I am sorry if I 've built too much expectations or given too little credit. I'm no athlete and I can't chew gum and walk straight. So these are just small sample oberservations on rookies who could have just been haveing good/bad days.

Izzy's shots kind of reminded me of Sean Carter but not as bad as in his first year with us. I think Iz was getting about half in with an occaisional clunker. TBerg was probably about the same but his shots looked very different each time he tossed one up there.

Trey looked like he was doing everything exactly the same each time and was hitting about 80%.

But as Allen Iverson says, "It was just practice." They could have had other shit on their minds. They are newbies and the coaches will teach them the right way to do things. I'm no expert on anything -- Just a die hard UMie that wants to see these kids develop and have a great UMass experience.

Cheers,

DoctorJ Very Happy

haha, pretty spot on Niles.

Everyone is different in how they shoot FTs. What really matters is having the elbow in.

Update on ankle injury. Should be able to play on Tuesday.

Kellogg also hoping to use Tyler and Izzy to back up Cady, although he's still wishing he could find a way to reward Maxie for his energy and effort with a starting position.

Maybe start Maxie at the 5 and run like mad for the first ten minutes of the game????

For some reason that concept appeals to me!!

I would personally prefer Maxie as the energy guy coming off of the bench and playing starter minutes.
