Whatever floats your boat! I'll take my Stop & Shops and Roche Bros anyday of the week! And I don't need them to be near Gillette either |
IV, you'll understand more about this sort of thing when you get married. My wife, being from Milford, is happy that we'll be driving by the Wrentham outlets on game days. |

For your sake, hopefully the key words are "driving BY".
I'm not impressed with those outlets. News programs I've seen report that companies manufacture lower tier products for sale at outlets like these. _________________ "Win without boasting, lose without crying." -- Julius Erving |

Note to lose focus, but yes many/most companies do make lower quality items for outlets. For instance, the "346" line at Brooks Brothers is notorious for its lower quality. The trick is to find clearance of first quality that have been shipped to the outlet.
Hopefully, we won't have to go there too often during the season. However, as long as I don't miss kick-off and I can stay in the car with the children then I don't mind stopping by if she wants to check out a few stores. |

Yes. The "married thing" hit the nail on the head. However, this whole "shopping trip" mentality is actually not completely unrelated to UMass football at Gillette. Even a wife who's a casual football fan won't mind going to games if you bribe her with a post-game dinner and some shopping time at Patriots Place. It's potentially more season tickets sold, so I'm pointing out that this is actually a good thing. |

You would have only gotten 1 season ticket if Patriot's Place didn't exist? _________________ Stop waiting for UMass to do something big and help UMass do something big. - Shades |

| Let's just say the game day experience will be greatly enhanced by being at Gillette compared to that dump of a stadium in Amherst. Nothing like a bathroom trip at McGuirk through the parking lot to those 1960's era latrines. |

Agreed. The old Foxboro Stadium was definitely "McGuirk East" |

I"ll kick the hornets nest which is IV....
Umass is not only competing for sports fan's money but entertainment dollars. I haven't been to Patriot Place but I have heard good things and the opportunity to have shopping, different food options, and the game could really open the door to a larger fan base.
We always hear about how many alumni are in Eastern Mass, and the vast majority of those people are over 30, meaning there is a heck of a good chance they are married with a family. While I am not thrilled about it I too have come to the realization as I get older that having a family will mean less time for me to watch games without being bothered. I have to think this is the same thing that happens to many sports fans.
So lets think about two options. 1 Joe Six pack tells his wife that he wants to go to the UMass game on Saturday afternoon. 2 Joe Six pack tells his wife that he is taking the family to the UMass game and they will be going to the Patriots hall of fame before the game, then shopping and dinner afterwards.
My uneducated guess is he has a better chance of seeing his Minutemen play with option number 2. There is also a better chance that the family (more butts in seats) will be attending the game for option 2 rather than just him and his old drinking buddy.
So is "Patriot Place" and "Outlet Shopping" an ancillary benefit to IV right now maybe not, could it be if there is a Mrs. (or another Mr. I don't judge) & Baby IV down the line, maybe. Is there an ancillary (possibly even real benefit to many members of this board I think so.
If one were to follow my possibly long winded logic they might even see a benefit to the program through the increased fan base.
There could be some real growing pains on the field and sports fans can be bandwaggoners so IMHO UMass is crazy if they don't market the hell out of playing at Gillette because there is the possibility winning will not be the #1 draw.
I have ranted about it in other threads but the Patriots have a long ass wait list, (yes because they are good) UMass provides another revenue source to the Krafts can use to leverage the goodwill the Pats have gained over the last decade (Maybe not even having to share it with the NFL?).
Any billboards up yet? Maybe one near wherever the Patriots hold Minicamp with a picture of Gillette, the UMass helmet and tag line "Season Tix starting at $XX.00 Feel the Revolution!" _________________ UConn girls are........................... Huskies!! |

Boys, calm down! jeeeeeeeeeessssh!
If photoman had just said "hey, this is great, I get to go down to Gillette and experience some of the great things along the way (like MILFORD!!!!) and Patriot's Place at the stadium as part of OUR gameday experience" in a general post, I would have never responded!
My commute is going from one trip of an hour and 15 minutes to 25 minutes... there is a fringe benefit for me! YAY!!!
And there will be no Mr., mister! _________________ Stop waiting for UMass to do something big and help UMass do something big. - Shades |

^ Not surprising, it's April, the Sawks are playing and Da Broons just went quietly into the night. Why waste advertising $$ now on something that's not happening until September. Seeing a billboard about UMass F-ball in April isn't piquing the casual fan's interest during baseball season, IMO.
Boston sports fans KNOW that UMass has made the jump. ALL of the news outlets have been visited by Molnar. The alum that care have made their move toward purchasing season tickets. Unfortunately, the rest are typical UMass fans/alum who will become interested if/when the team wins.
Again, billboards in April for UMass football in September would be a waste of advertising dollars, IMO. |

I don't think it would be a waste. I certainly don't think we should take over every billboard in April, but it would be good to get some up now. One on 93 and one on the Pike would be a good start before any major blitz.
Don't spend it all in one place, though!! _________________ Stop waiting for UMass to do something big and help UMass do something big. - Shades |
