|
|
I received a request from one of our terrific alums, himself a former UM athlete and a continual great supporter of UMass athletics and more.
"Ed--You are an eloquent spokesman for UMass--kindly help with this--it's very important that we support our leaders here--
Would you kindly pass on to likeminded loyal UMass friends who would like to support this well deserved and timely UMass leadership decision to raise UMass Football to the highest collegiate level--great for school, alums and students."
VERY IMPORTANT: (Please see attached lists of names/addresses-no calls)
Dear friends and supporters of UMass Football and proud UMass alums,
On Saturday( after a great UMass BB win and terrific appearance by Victor Cruz) I met with Athletic Director and friend, John McCutchen. I told him of FOF's plans to meet w/coach and offer our best support for him and the Program.
John said great--However--he said, with real urgency, that the very most important and best thing that we could do immediately for UMass Football was for each and every one of us to write to the Chancellor, President, Chairman of BOT, and Faculty Senate essentially saying-" thank you for making this important and well deserved move to D-1--for believing in our great UMass football tradition and for investing in football's future at the highest level--I totally support you for your decision as a proud UMass alum who plans to support the team and program by being at our games and helping in any way I can"--add your own personal--Been waiting for years--great step in right direction alongside our nationally recognized academics--wonderful opportunities for building more UMass pride and tradition--
All these people have heard LOTS of negatives--faculty madness-negative Boston Globe, NY Times, Springfield papers--BUT--no great overpowering groundswell of alumni support, to offset--Chancellor hanging out there a he inherited this-only here 10 months--and he gets very little--not enough support from alums. Ditto for Pres, Chairman of Board --and faculty senate guy has to be bombarded by hundreds of us writing to him saying we are totally in favor and supportive of D-1 and it's importance.
Please remember--MANY of us lead the fight-started the ball rolling to go D-1--Now we have it, BUT--we absolutely need to support the leaders who made the decision--made the committment --and stuck their "necks" out for us--and this very expensive and-- apparently to some, controversial move. When attacked/questioned--what can they fire back with??
IF we are really and truly Friends Of UMass Football-so many of you are former great players-and some us never played but love our team and can see the great football future-- Then-We Have To Invest A Few Very worthwhile minutes minutes and send each one of these people a personal note of thanks and support-- They will be most grateful to hear from every one of us--NO Checks needed--just your gratitude, support, spirit and belief in UMass Football--without us sending hundreds of letters--I see these leaders asking themselves if alums--AND especially former players like many of you,and the rest of us, who are now successful men and proud UMass grads-if we really do care?? Let's show them we do ASAP!!

It has been suggested to me to post a different email address for Henry Thomas; the aol address may be a dead end.

Got a response from Mr. Faber. He was one of the few Fac Senate members who spoke out in favor of the FBS move at the January meeting.
He sounds like a great guy.
| Quote: | Mr. ........,
Not all of the faculty senate is opposed to the Football program and its move to the FBS. I argued in favor of letting the FBS transition proceed forward, and the vote in January was 19 to 18 (with one abstention) to defeat a motion to try and end the FBS effort. The issue will not be raised again until next year at this point. I'm not sure if you will have any luck in influencing the members of the faculty senate, many of whom are very empassioned academics who believe the move was a bad idea. I do, however, believe you will have more luck and future influence, by expanding the ability of the student population to participate in the Football activities. For instance if there were ways for groups to raise money via concessions/events/tailgates. Increasing participation by local business, etc, as well as continuing the program of sending students out for games, I think the ground swell of support from the student body and alumni would do a lot to allow the chancellor to keep the program on track. Anything the alumni can do to increase student participation and gather/generate support by the local community is the key to muting any future efforts to stop the successful transition. Best of luck in you efforts and let me know if there is anything I can do to help, because I happen to agree that the move was the right choice for this university.

Yeah he definitely is a great guy.
I think a lot of the Fac Senate has my email address on a block list at this point because of all the emails I have sent them. So I'll be surprised if I get many responses. |

Yeah, I'm not a military guy, I wasn't sure how that works so I thought I would play it safe and go with Mr. Faber.
I didn't want to mess that up.
Thanks for the heads up though, now I know. |

I sent an email to a bunch of them this morning asking them for their support and to make sure they give it adequate time before reacting.
Within 3 minutes I got a response from Henry Thomas stating
"Thanks for your letter Jay!
I can assure you, we are in it for the long haul!
Henry"
Which I think is very encouraging. I sent it to the aol address.
Here is kumble's response...
"Thank you for taking the time to write to me and to President Caret to express your support for our football program. As I said in a statement released last month, “I am fully committed to working with Athletic Director John McCutcheon and Coach Molnar to ensure that our participation at the premier level of college football continues to be a source of pride for years to come for everyone associated with our great university. I look forward to seeing all of our old and new UMass fans next season as we build an outstanding football program together.”
President Caret and I thank you for your continued support of UMass Amherst and its athletic program.
Regards,
Kumble R. Subbaswamy" |

I got the same one from Swamy, which is funny because I didn't actually send it to him this time, just Caret. So I assume all of Caret's emails are also sent to Swamy? (Or should I say, Swamy's assistant). |

That's a good thing as far as I can tell. To me that response from Caret/Swamy says: We have received so many e-mails about this that we created a standard-form response that can be sent to each person concerned about the program. _________________ "Wherever I go, I’ll never be bashful about being from UMass, baby.” -Victor Cruz |

I just got a nasty email from an Anthropology professor who is on the Faculty Senate. Wow.
| Quote: | Dear ......,
I'm glad that you're pleased by the Chancellor's decision to spend tens of millions of tax-payer and student-fee dollars on a semi-pro football team.
Given that you added me to your email, I'm sure that you're aware that I couldn't disagree with you more. The measure of a university is not in how many millions it adds to the bottom lines of the NCAA or ESPN, but whether or not it offers the best opportunity for students to learn and explore.
If you would like to replace the $10 million that was taken out of the UMass Amherst budget this year in order to fund a failed semi-pro football team, I will welcome your contribution. Otherwise, whatever donation you make won't even cover the added expense of the lowest-paid member of the football support staff.
Yours,
Michael Sugerman |
