its better than what will be left of the A10, potentially. The non-football schools will poach X and Dayton and St Louis eventually to form a nice hoops conference with Nova, S hall, Gtown, St Johns, Marquette, etc.
We need to find an all sports home in my opinion....and a new, albeit watered down Big East probably makes more sense than the MAC and all the directional Michigans. |

Can't argue with the combo of Umass Uconn and Temple forming a pretty nice northeast geographical footprint. |

All this league shuffling in CFB is unfathomable..it's like a bad episode of Melrose Place..who is in bed with who, and when..ugh..
I would like to think we are positioned pretty good for a move in another year, two or three..we'll be full D1A members after next season..and should, at that time be an attractive option..especially if we can make some noise in the first few years..by that ..good crowds at the Razor and maybe some competitive effort on the field. |

It's times like this that we should be incredibly happy about the timing of our maneuver. _________________ "Wherever I go, I’ll never be bashful about being from UMass, baby.” -Victor Cruz |

| I can understand Temple coming up with the 2.5 Million MAC departure fee, but how is the contractual obligation to give two years notice going to be handled? |

More $$$ paid to MAC..
Does this mean we can have another non-league game? |

Great question about another possible OOC game, but who'd be available? Possibly another one of the teams who made a conference switch, or maybe we could just play Temple as on OOC opponent. |

As much as I was a basketball first priority proponent as that was the big time sport we had while I was a student from 92-96, foootball is what, as they say, "drives the bus". I believe we need to position our program in the best possible football program and then bring the other sports. I'm not sure if we have any leverage however we would I gather play the large flagship campus, tv market, academics, Gillette, sleeping giant card that we have heard before. The MAC of course will be a whole bunch richer if Temple leaves as the payout by Temple to leave this soon may be borne in part by the Big East and in excess of that 3 million amount.
Additionally, the MAC has been, as far as I can tell, cordial to us as a new member. They invited us to join and we should continue to be a team player as long as our circumstances permit.

So the Big East is actually making a move that makes sense? Who'd a thunk it?
I think this is somewhat mixed news regarding UMass: we now lose a nice rival in both basketball and football... on the other hand, it makes us a more fitting piece for the revamped Big East in the near future. |

The MAC has the right to convert our "sustaining" membership to a term membership of not less than 2 years if Temple leaves. It's not automatic, but it's an option at the sole discretion of the MAC. They definitely do not want 13 members, so they will either reduce us to a term deal or seek out a new 14th member.
To answer another question elsewhere: no extra OOC game if Temple leaves. Unless the MAC drops below 9 members, we will play 8 conference games. Temple will be replaced on our schedule with another MAC team if they buy out of their 2 years' notice obligation to the MAC and begin Big East play this year, which is what the Big East wants. My guess is we would then just inherit whatever Temple's schedule would have been had UMass never joined the MAC.
Bowling Green might be moved back to the East division. The problem with a 13 team conference playing 8 league games is that not all the members in the larger division will play each other. Theoretically, you could have two 8-0 teams in the same division, and one would get left out of the MAC championship game. There would also be one team left off the conference schedule every week, and non-conference scheduling is difficult late in the season, especially when most of it is done years in advance. Avoiding all this crap is why the MAC invited UMass in the first place, and why they wanted the right to terminate if Temple left. |

How does Temple leaving affect our football schedule for this season? If at all. _________________ Any team, any time, any place |

I don't think we know yet. I believe it is possible that they leave the MAC immediately for football based on what I have read. But I could be wrong. _________________ Refuse To Lose!!! |
