I've been wondering why I wasn't disappointed by this 20-point loss. Well, a big part of it is that I didn't have any expectation that UMass would win. It's never going to bother me when UMass loses (even by 20) to a team that is better than they are. The losses over the last decade teat have really been bad are the numerous losses to teams that UMass should beat handily. Fordham last year being a great example. If this team can beat the teams that they should beat then the team will do considerably better than most of us expect, Given that they've lost a few of those games every year for a long time, if they don't lose them this year then I will see that as huge progress.

The other thing is, with this fast-paced style of play, the margins are going to be bigger, on average, in both wins and losses. So even though this was a 20 point loss, it didn't look quite that bad as far as 20 point losses go.

FSU beat #4 Duke at Cameron today. Our loss to FSU doesn't look quite as bad now.

Does that have an impact on us? What is BC's RPI? Any chance of them sneeking into the top 100?

At 8-16, unlikely they would be Top 100. Lucky to be Top 200.

i think it helps more than an fsu win would have because bc and us have a lot of common opponents. actually, our most influential non-conference opponent mathematically is BC, so any wins from them will only help us.

BC's win over FSU will move the UMass / Bona recap from page 13 of the Globe to the "Things to do" piece in the weekend travel section:

THINGS TO DO IN THE BERKSHIRES:

#3. Attend a cultural event at one of the many local colleges.

(accompanied by 1"x1" grainy photo of Gary Forbes circa 2008 and a caption that says "UMass-Amherst beat St. Bonaventure last night")

Sruprisingly Jeff Wagenheim has been doing some pretty good stories this year.

As much as the Globe ignores a lot out here, I agree with Swampy that Jeff has written some nice articles covering our games this season. I try to make a point to comment after them just so they know we appreciate the coverage. If you see postings by "franknbeans" that's me. I have seen Mike post there before as well, encouraging folks to make the drive out to see some hoops in the hinterlands of Massachusetts. I do my best to drag people to the games, and this team has delivered. I'm trying to temper my enthusiasm after some bumpy years, but a workmate caught me smiling "for no reason" the other day, so I showed him the Chazz-to-Putney alley-oop in the Bonaventure game. He went bug-eyed. Hell, I'm smiling right now. Imagine Cady at center, Esho at power forward, and Putney at small forward, each with all cylinders firing...awe heck, there I go smiling again.
