Wow, that's a bit of a coup for us. He took Northeastern to the NCAA Tournament and was the CAA's coach of the year last year. There's apparently a bit of a story behind this. Husky fans are being coy, but it sounds like NU did the man wrong. We didn't poach him so much as we were in need of a coach at just the right time, because he was leaving NU regardless.

Looks like a good hire. I don't know why the AD doesn't get a good coach for womens BB? There's a sleeping giant waiting to happen!

Are the crybabies from Northeastern going to sue again?

Lots of very positive comments thrown by Matz towards UMass in Dewey's article here. And by implication, some shots at Northeastern. Sounds like Ian McCaw was an effective ambassador for the university.

I missed it. What happened to the woman who coached this past season?

Interim head coach Angie Napoli was interim.

Got the dirt on what really happened. Apparently Matz's move is 100% due to Northeastern disbanding their football team but re-allocating none of the money to women's soccer, which has been NU's most successful sports team the past few years despite having the fewest scholarships in the CAA and fewer than most America East teams. The very same day that Northeastern was holding a meeting to divvy up the funds to 7 other teams, he called UMass for our job. We sent him an offer later that night and he accepted the next day. We had offered him this job before the 2009 season but he turned it down back then. Apparently his first act as UMass coach was to cancel next season's game with Northeastern. So, this was bitter. Gotta be careful when you make public statements about how dropping football is going to help all your other teams and then not follow through.

There's an audio interview from the NU radio station at this link:

He doesn't mince words.

Tough start for the new coach, losing 3-0 to Washington. The Huskies were really the better team, keeping possession for long stretches of the game.

Congratulations to Coach Matz for guiding the women's soccer team to its first postseason win in 14 years! Shocked

We're talking A10 postseason, not NCAAs. No wins in 14 years in the A10. The 3 goals scored against Bona were 3 more than were scored in the last 12 A10 tournaments combined.

The team is now 14-4-2 on the season and 2 wins away from the conference championship. Put the right person in charge, see results.
