In addition to the excellent football schedule, Umass gets paid very, very, handsomely to play most of those games.
In addition getting Indiana, Vanderbilt, Colorodo, and BC to come to our home is equally impressive. I also applaud Coach Molnar for agreeing to play this challenging slate. |

Not to discredit Molnar, but a lot of these were scheduled or in the works before he signed on. To his credit, though, he hasn't told the department to back off... this is great stuff and I am beyond excited about it! _________________ Stop waiting for UMass to do something big and help UMass do something big. - Shades |

| Awesome schedule. Thinking back to where we were two years ago, this is pretty surreal. |

That explains things. _________________

| we're in a totally different football situation than we are in basketball. we are the football equivalent of the basketball independents, who all the big schools want to schedule for easy wins. the independents always end up with the highest sos. in basketball we are just dangerous enough to beat teams but not well respected enough and consistent enough for it not to be a bad loss for some teams. |

Nah, it's just that we don't WANT to schedule big name teams for huge paydays in basketball. We can schedule anyone we want to and play them anywhere in basketball, we just don't want to. Our administration prefers scheduling Elon because they don't like getting more than 3500 people at athe games, and REALLY want to avoid any chance that ESPN might want to televise us.
If football can do it, basketball should, too, because there are no differences at all in how scheduling works among sports. |

We can schedule much better in basketball - but we have to go on the road and do not want to. Football we are going on the road and have a challenging schedule. Football will make millions for playing those games.
If we had someone scheduling basketball, who knew what they were doing, we would not have had the worst out of conference schedule in the Atlantic 10. Last. |

EXACTLY. No one is offering us millions in basketball. Scheduling in hoops and football are about as alike the skill sets of Andrew McCarthy and Chaz Williams. The comparison is a joke. Could/should we get better teams in hoop? Sure, we'd all like to see it improve. But it's not just a matter of deciding we want to play Providence instead of Elon. And the fact that football is booking all these games has NOTHING to do with our desire or ability to do the same in basketball. Nothing. |

Chris, as I have said many times, and you have ignored many times, we could go on the road in basketball and play quality opponents. Whether we make $100,000 as some teams pay or nothing at all, just to get the game, we can get the games period.
If you think that getting games at Michigan (and 800 large) or games at Notre Dame in Football are easy to get in you are wrong. How many teams would like to get these games. |

| vanmeter - most UMass basketball fans don't want to see UMass play a tough schedule AND lose. That's what happened with Bruiser. That's what would have happened this year in basketball and would happen next year. The football situation IS completely different. UMass fans expect the team to lose all of those tough games just put on the schedule. They understand that football is in a transitional period. They understand that the team is unlikely to win big games for a few years. In basketball, the fans just want to see wins and they want to see many of them. You griped about the schedule all year but the fact remains that UMass would have been in the NCAA tournament had they won games against weak opponents in games that they lost (Charleston, Duquesne and URI). |

Not saying it's easy to get those teams in football. It's awesome. It's just totally different than basketball, and doesn't mean anything in terms of how easy it is just to go play anyone we want on the road in hoops.
I think you ignore the fact that we have to play SOME home games. And I think you ignore the fact that we can't just play good teams on the road because we decide to. We are not (or at least haven't been of late) a team that BCS teams want to bring in and spend money on. They want a definite win or a big name for a TV game/good RPI game. We have been neither.
Teams are not interested in the choice between ho-hum win/bad loss.....which is what we have had to offer. Add in the fact that we can't pay big money for teams to come to Amherst, and you have what we've seen....we're locked in to 2-for-1 or H/H with crappy teams.
Do you really think Kenney, Kellogg, etc. don't know what would serve us better as far as scheduling? Do you really think they'd prefer Elon and Towson to Providence and Maryland? My beef with you has never been that you don't like the basketball schedule. It's that you think that the administration either don't know enough or don't want it to be better. You ignore the very real challenges a middling team with no money has when putting together a schedule. And using football's scheduling success to beat your dead horse even further makes no sense, they have absolutely nothing to do with each other. |

If you don't like Tim Kenney then the last few posts by vanmeter make a lot of sense.
