I would suggest that if you like Tim Kenney then Chris 20 and Umass87 posts make alot of sense.
The bottom line is that our our out of conference strenth of schedule was 248 last in the A10.
And 87 if I want to complain about the schedule I will do so regardless of what you have to say. You and Chris can continue to make your thousand posts and comment on every little thing as it pertains to Umass. |

I think the going rate for paydays this year is now a cool $mill, very nice. If we are going to take our football lumps might as well fill up the coffers.
As for the basketball schedule I like to think the weak schedule this year was set up on purpose so we could succeed and build off it. Not too many coaches last 5 years without at least a 20 win season and DK's numbers needed to be boosted, and looking at it less jadedly the team's confidence needed to be restored. Now next year and beyond should be a different story, we need to step it up.
I'm too lazy to look back, but whoever brought Bruiser's name into the argument made me throw up. Is that his excuse, the schedule was too tough? Or is that our excuse for him? I make no excuses for that stiff, he was handed a free lunch and f'd it up. Boring basketball that struggled to score 60 points a night, the thought of it now still gets me irate. _________________ UMass '87 |

86-72 Against some pretty tough competition. 52-28 conference record with a trip to the finals in his last season.
Yeah, the guy was an abject failure! |

Less than 3 games per year over .500 is a good record? Not in my book, maybe in yours. With a steady downward trend. And an inability to recruit. And an inability to play exciting basketball. And an inability to win a post-season game, any post-season game. But if your idea of fun is losing 51-47 he's your man for sure. _________________ UMass '87 |

| i just find it funny that, other than chris20 and maybe a few others, no one seems to realize that the big name teams play the worst teams in the country in every sport and now that we're fbs for football, we are the equivalent of savanah st in basketball. we're the cupcake in football, thats really the biggest reason why all these huge schools are scheduling us in football and not basketball. |

| Nope. It's Kenney. He likes 3000 people at the Bill for NJIT. Or doesn't know any better. |

ktabz16- Im not delusional about the level we are at yet its not a profound notion that as there are much less games it is a premium to play the likes of the upper echelon programs and each game does receive quite a bit of publicity. That and a nice paycheck help build a program. Its exciting to tell a recruit that he will be playing at these venues against storied programs too. I gather the schools that schedule us considered any backlash from their alumni as well and deemed us kind of worthy.

I dont think the two are that related. Football rules the universe of many schools, but UMass happens to be in an area (the Northeast) and be a school (UMass) where basketball is bigger. This puts us in a weird position in developing scheduling relationships. Throw in the transition we're in and this is just a really unique position for scheduling on a lot of fronts.
That, and we are hardly the equivalent of Savannah State. Major football programs play FCS schools, they can schedule Savannah State if they want to, and they do. But then they get heat from fans and pundits who say they should be playing more exciting opponents. Then a major state university from the quasi-Boston media market decides to start playing FBS football, and suddenly these schools can put 'Massachusetts' or 'UMass' on their schedule in place of The Citadel or Pick-a Directional Michigan and we become somewhat of a commodity.
Are we still paying to lose and among the lower class of the FBS? Of course. But we are not the bottom feeders like the Savannah States of the world, we are much, much closer to legitimacy than that.
Basketball is an entirely different animal when it comes to scheduling. _________________
