Well, the news has reached Europe now, Telegraph newspaper.

Stupidity echoes globally - thanks a lot, dummies.

More quotes with names attached at that link. Also a photo gallery with people's names. Seems like UMass could easily hand out punishment.

This broad should be looking for a new school over the summer. End of. Anyone who provided a name and made comments this ridiculous should be done with the University of Massachusetts.

Sarah Ellis, there is nothing funny about rioting!

I would not qualify this as a riot. Less than 1% of those in attendance stayed the night in jail and there was no property damage.

So, has anyone actually determined if this was a riot or not? By all accounts, it doesn't look like it.

It did not look like it to me either. From what I was able to see on TV it was a bunch of students that would not move out when the police requested it. Then the police sent in some smoke bombs and everyone started running in a lot of directions. I did see an interview with a student that had a cut on his arm from a thrown bottle but that is the only injury I heard about.

My take is this sort of thing happens every weekend after football games at many BCS schools e.g. at the Auburn oak tress that the Bama fan poisoned is regularly the scene for post game gatherings of similar sized crowds.

Talk about blowing things out of proportion...

The use of the word "riot" is the cause of the uproar, not what actually happened.

No damage, no injuries...maybe UMass police should have left the horses in the barn.

EBox's post nailed it!

Our opinions do not echo into the hinterlands, folks.

If the press and others are waiting for UMASS to F*** Up, so be it, but we manage to fit/feed the stereotype often enough it is an intellectually easy story to propound, despite the facts of little/no damage, and 5 of 6 dorm areas quiet. Would diligent reporters drive around campus and see how quiet most of it is, and that SW is a 'place unto itself' - that would be nice, but it is easier to cover the smoke, the crowds, the police - great video - than provide balance.

As a marketing person, perception = reality.

And, once again, despite UM administration admonitions, and Cruz requests, SW dumb asses proved to be just that.

UMASS seems to stand alone in idiocy about what, after all, is a game.

^

I don't know, I don't think there were any long term effects (other than general police crack down in Amherst) from what happened in 2004. And we got HAMMERED in the press after that. The school has continued to improve academically since then. After a day or two, no one will remember what happened Sunday night.

Academics and what happened Sunday night are mutually exclusive.

If you can't go out and act like a college kid while you're in college, when can you do so?

People need to lighten up.

The media chose to use the word "riot" to sell papers and boost ratings. Embarassed

Econ...I sincerely doubt that UMass stands alone inthe after game celebrations department.

1,500 our of what, over 20,000, kids came out to have some fun...no damage or injuries. Police over reacted and so did the media.

Go UMass!

reporters, cameras and police were all there before the students were. the media rewarded the kids by putting them on tv and on the web.

how great would it be if the next time a boston team wins or loses that no students show up in southwest and the police and reporters are left to slink home without the gratification of demonizing our state u or firing tear gas into a crowd.

All I will say is that UNH can kiss my ass. They wish they had enough enrolled students and cows to have a riot.

They've certainly tried plenty of times.

I mean, nothing says class and dignity like rioting after a presidential election.

One of the kids who got expelled after the Super Bowl disturbance is suing the University.

BINGO!

I think UMass does more harm than good by continuing to insist that this is "riotous" behavior. I remember the scenes in Chapel Hill the last time UNC won the national title, with thousands of kids pouring into the town, and acting the same way. I'm sure there was some damage, but since it was UNC they passed it off as "celebrating" instead.

In general, the police in Amherst are a bit of a disgrace. Town cops are worse by far, but these riot police that are called in from across the state are always going to escalate the situation. They're working O/T, so you can bet they all want to make it seem worthwhile. If there aren't enough kids doing anything that's actually dangerous, then they'll discharge some teargas, at the very least. And if they're really lucky, maybe they can ruin a couple Freshman kids' lives by arresting them for yelling profanities.

I hope this kid is rich so he won't get bullied into dropping his lawsuit. The due process is an interesting case to bring against the school - I saw some pretty shady police/UMass admin practices at UMass, so it'll be interesting to see if someone actually has the resources to bring them to court over it.
