A nice summary of early recruiting rankings by Maroon Musket:
Early Recruiting Ranks
Note that these rankings are based on only about half of our recruits, as the recruiting services haven't caught up with our latest commitments |

Looks like Penn State is going to get buried with penalties tomorrow, probably a major loss of scholarships for many years and a multi year bowl band. Have to think this is an opportunity for us and othsr teams to steal some kids. _________________ UMass '87 |

Hammer time:
No bowls for 4 years
Loss of 10 scholarships per year for next 4 years
Any current player can transfer without restrictions (can leave and play immediately)
Huge fine
Double secret probation going forward _________________ UMass '87 |

Interesting article. Although Vautour is wrong with the second list when he states it remains to be seen whether recruits will be allowed to transfer. The NCAA President stated clearly that all current AND incoming players will be allowed to transfer and play immediately. _________________ UMass '87 |

| ^ To be fair, he wrote the article before the official press conference happened. I wouldn't say he is "wrong", just perhaps he didn't update that piece of it as of yet. |

I don't think he wrote the article beforehand, nobody knew details until 9am this morning. Loss of scholarships, bowl band etc were expected but nobody anticipated allowing players to become free agents.
Not knocking him by any means as his article is exactly what I was thinking when I made my post yesterday afternoon. My thoughts were on 2013 recruits, I wasn't even thinking current players or 2012 recruits. This morning's announcement put all players from Seniors to incoming freshman to (of course) 2013 verbal commits up for grabs. _________________ UMass '87 |

Read the article but I just don't any guys at Umass. The guys that transfer are transferring mostly because they'll want to win and play in a bowl, both of which won't happen at Umass any time soon. If it's for playing time, they'll get plenty of it there too so I don't see the point. Unless the stigma is that strong for them, in which case freshman or sophomores I would think would have already transferred.
I will be interesting to see how many incoming recruits don't end up there. They should have seen this coming so I'm wondering if any at all end up leaving. |

^ There is NO Question that there will be people leaving . . . The real
question is how many? |

The fact that kids can transfer without sitting out a year is gigantic. May not see a huge exodus this year, most teams start camp in a week or so, but after the season ends the airlines are going to have to book extra flights into Happy Valley.
Where we could benefit first is with kids who want immediate playing time and only have 1-2 years left of eligibility, just like the three 5th year seniors we got this summer. Those players could have gone other places but they came here, why? Playing time. Same is going to happen with Penn State kids. I'm not talking Silas Redd, I'm talking the 4th WR, the 4th CB, the 3rd Tackle etc. Going to give us what we are lacking, 1A talent at the upperclassman level.
The more long term benefit is with recruits. Who the hell wants to go to Penn State now? The kids will go somewhere else and hopefully we will get our share. We may not get the 5 star recruit, he'll got to Pitt or Rutgers now, which pushes other, slighlty lesser recruits down towards us. We are part of the food chain now, and there is one less predator at the top so everybody underneath gets to eat a little better. _________________ UMass '87 |

Nobody thought this was coming. Even the day after the Sandusky trial no one thought this was coming. Bill O'Brien was quoted saying to recruits that this was NOT a Penn State issue, it was a Sandusky issue. It was only the Freeh report that made it clear this was a Penn State issue and now there are clear ramifications for players. No Bowls, no Big Ten Championship, a much weaker team. _________________ UMass '87 |

Bill Obrien probably said a lot of things, but it was flat out dumb to think that nothing was coming down. A lot of people saw something coming so I disagree with you there.
And why would anyone leave Penn st. to go to Umass for playing time? Penn st. is going to have loads of playing time. |

While you obviously had the penalties all figured out months ago I think it's a stretch to assume an 18 year old kid who runs fast did the same thing. And if you think Bill O'Brien thought there would be penalties like this when he decided to leave Bill Belichick and Tom Brady I would strongly disagree.
Why would they leave? No championship, no bowls, little TV. I bet Coach Molnar has more than a few relationships with current Penn State players. Probably lost some recruits to them while he was recruiting for Notre Dame. Maybe some of those relationships were good enough that the players want to come play for him at a building, feel good program instead of playing for Diddler U. _________________ UMass '87 |
