You are probably right, but Mike Williams hit one to beat #1 UNC at the pre-season NIT (the next fall I think) - that was pretty damn cool as well.

I saw Harper's shot live in Worcester - but my ears are still ringing from the noise in the bar as Mike's shot fell...

Artie Bowers vs Temple?
Vigg vs UCONN?
Penny vs Temple?
Chaz vs X?

All joking aside, the Williams vs Cuse one is the biggest, hands down.

Candidates that I thought of, in my order of preference...

1. Barbee's shot to force overtime at Siena, 1991 NIT Quarter-Final
Written up here: http://umasshoops.com/games/1999-2000/0316siena/previews.htm#article1
Barbee makes the Siena PA guy look silly with premature info about Siena's trip to the semis in NYC. That signaled our arrival that we were a team to be reckoned with in the 1990s.

2. Harper's shot seals the trip to the Sweet 16, 1992.
Just about everybody knows this one.

3. Mike Williams hit a 3 late in overtime against North Carolina in the 1993 Pre-Season NIT, extending a 1-point lead to 4.

4. Mike Williams late 3 gives UMass the win at GW, 2/13/1993.
UM was down 16 in the second half, but stormed back. Williams seems to have had some toes on the line, but it was ruled a 3. Watch:

Watch Bruiser mob him after the game was over.

5. Mike Williams hitting a late 3 to help UMass win at Temple, 51-50.

6. Jim McCoy three-quarter court shot at the halftime buzzer in the Sweet 16, 1992.

An incredible shot, but didn't really have bearing on the outcome of the game, so it falls down the list.

I know Crooks always loved the Eric Williams 3-Pointer in 2002 to force OT in the Opener of the A-10 tourney. Was that against X, Crooks? Wink

Bumpa's right about Mike Williams and the Barbee shot certainly deserves mention, but it's hard to go against a shot that wins an NCAA tournament game. So it's got to be the Harper Williams shot.

I am with Mike. Barbee/Siena put Umass into the national comsciousness.

Harper Williams' shot, hands down.

I believe it was the first time we played Syracuse since the Dr. J beat down, and the subseqent ignoring of our presence by the Orangemen. It was a win that took us to the Sweet Sixteen for the first time ever. The shot clock was approaching zero. A miss or shot clock violation gave Syracuse a chance to run the clock down and get off a potential game-winner. We had no viable options to get off a good shot and looked lost in the offense. Harper had made one career three-pointer. He called for the ball because he understood the on-court situation. I yelled at my TV, "Shoot! Shoot!" Harper hit the shot. I jumped about three feet in the air. Umass advanced. Syracuse went home.

I've been a proponent of the value of the NIT, so I can see those who argue Barbee's shot. And Mike Williams shot against UNC (aided by the play of Mr. Jeff Meyers) announced that the program was here to stay. But these two are relegated to #'s 2 and 3.

Harper's shot is the most "significant" 3 in UMass history!
