The man in this video has been in Congress nearly 5 years. He is on the House Science, Space and Technology Committee. He's a trained MD. He says not only that he doesn't believe in evolution, or embryology or that the universe came into being billions of years ago in an unfathomably huge explosion; he says that such ideas are tools of the Devil.

Either he's pandering to the fundamentalist Christian crowd, that is, lying, or he actually does believe what he's saying.
The GA 10th Congressional District includes Athens, with the University of Georgia. There are around 700,000 people living in the district. In 2010, 204,967 people voted, 67.4% for Broun, 32.6% for his Democratic challenger. In 2012 Broun is running unopposed. One has to assume that Broun represents the thinking of the typical voter living in that district, or is at least saying that he does. In other words, there are at least 138,147 people in a small part of Georgia who are as willfully ignorant and self-delusional as Broun. That's like a city the size of Hartford, CT in which every last person has those beliefs. Extrapolate this to other Georgia-like places in the U.S. We're doomed.

This was posted in the Presidential Election thread. I said it there and I'll say it again, people like this should be locked up. _________________ Stop waiting for UMass to do something big and help UMass do something big. - Shades |

Sorry guys. Maybe Mike or JJ will move this.
As to whether they should be locked up, no. Even if they're lying through they're teeth, if they're doing it about their own beliefs it's not a crime. Similarly, if they believe it, that's what they do. The real crime is that we, as a country, have let religion play such a major role in our politics, and that we as a society have not educated our citizens well enough to reject these bozos when they try to play a role in our political system.
The people who set up the country knew, based on their experience with Charles, James and Cromwell that letting religion play a role in the government would lead to trouble. And of course the present Exhibit A's are places like Pakistan, Somalia, Iraq and Afghanistan. _________________ There are some people that if they don't know, you can't tell 'em. Louis Armstrong |

If a doctor is NOT a scientist, and is confounded by non-scientific beliefs that contradict science, how good a doctor can he/she be? _________________ Feeling entitled is JUST a feeling... |
