Well, all of the finalists have visited the campus now. I only have the news stories of the public meetings to go by, but if those snippets of their words are any indication, then one of the candidates is standing out well above the others, at least in my eyes. We'll see if the UMass admin agrees.

I am not bubbling with enthusiasm for any of these candidates.

Andrews is at least from the state and got her first degree from Worcester State. She's had a high level position at Oregon.

Santiago also has a wealth of experience at several institutions. I think he could be a good choice.

Phillips has similar background to Santiago in that she held high posts at SUNY-Albany.

Subswammy has impressive academic credentials and said some good things but the followng comment seemed a little off:

Quote:
He also proposed greater partnerships with UMass Boston to bolster Amherst's profile.

I think partnerships between Amherst and UMass Boston would bolster UMB's profile, not the other way around. I'm all for system-wide interaction efforts but ultimately it is Amherst and Worcester that anchor the system's reputation.

At first glance, none of the candidates impress me as much as Holub.

Yeah, I agree. I think it is pretty obvious that this group was picked because they are looking for a cooperator rather than a strong leader.

I hope we are pleasantly surprised that the person ends up being able to have both qualities.

Personally, I think the best thing to happen to public education in Mass could be the Casinos. CT threw a lot of $$ at their higher ed that I don't think would have been there if there wasn't two casinos there to attract people from over the boarders.

I think it is a no-brainer to put the casinos in the areas of Holyoke/Springfield, Lowell and Fall River. Then we can attract $$ from other states and Mass people can stay in state if they want to gamble. Student's will find it easier to get pt jobs in these areas and won't have to go back home every weekend to work, as so many have to for economic reasons.

I believe that the proposed western mass casino was supossed to get us something like an extra $10 per year for the flagship campus alone. Correct me if my numbers are wrong.

I'm not a fan of gambling but if it raises the standard of living and tax revenues in the areas of our state universities, I'm all for it. We help mass at the same time we hurt CT.

The new Chancellor will soon realize the politics that go with the job. So it needs to be someone who can champion the cause of economic development in the regions of each campus.

I agree. Still, Sona Andrews is one who stands out if you ask me; at least she's not afraid to talk of bigger things for the campus. Plus she's from the area, and as mentioned, graduated from a state school nearby. That should count for something when it comes to understanding the environment in MA.

Subswammy turns me off a lot. He seems really out of touch based on several of his comments.

Not impressed by any of them, compared to Holub, who I have met several times.

Ask yourself - is UMASS in better, or worse, shape under Holub?

Pure politics.

I have met all of the last 4 or so Chancellors. Holub, reflecting all that UMASS offers, is the most impressive.

Advocacy does not equal conformity. More cooperation with UMB is a statement without meaning, except to be P.C. - there is your 'winner'. He 'gets' being P.C., which is what will matter most.

UM system does NOT WANT strong chancellor who get things done, like Lombardi and Holub. It wants conformity/mediocrity.

Agreed - none of these are nearly as good as Holub or Lombardi. This entire thing has been badly bungled as usual. Holub should be retained and these three should be thanked and dismissed.

Just a bit of perspective here - I agree with you guys on most of these candidates from the sounds of them, BUT, were we all that impressed with Holub when he was hired? I think most of us were still bummed out that we lost Lombardi, and I remember reading criticism as recently as two yrs ago that Holub was not enough of a leader/risk-taker. It was really only recently that we saw all of the things he was attempting / achieving at UMass. Point is, it can be hard to tell who the candidates actually are before they have a chance to perform.

That said, I'd say only one or two of these candidates appear to have potential to be a good leader - which is too bad because, really, we should be able to say that about all 4 of them.
