You may need to update your codecs. Download cccp coded pack. Also try media player classic or VLC. Beats the pants off Microsoft crap

The archiving of the first game in Mullins is ongoing as I type this.. the crowd finally got into the game here mid-second half.. Smile its 35-32 WV.. their big man just came out of the game w/a turned left ankle.. looked painful.

Cal just addressed the crowd because someone is throwing ice on the floor..

Quality for an SLP recording is pretty good. My parents must have had a decent analog cable signal that night back in NJ. The TBC feature of the VCR really makes a difference, as does running it through the noise filter of the Canopus ADVC-300..

I'm sure there's a lot of folks like me, but when any of these games become available on dvd, please send me a pm I'd love to get my hands on as many games as possible, willing to pay for discs, shipping, anything...could even provide my own blank dvd's. So if there are any games out there let me know! Thanks!

The VLC player worked for me. It's a free download here: http://www.videolan.org/vlc/

Copy the web address to the clipboard and then hit Ctrl-V. Pretty sweet.

Is there a way to simply copy these raw files to a file transfer site like Dropbox? When you are done making this WV game, let me know and I'll send you a link to my Dropbox folder as a test. If it works, it could be a pretty easy way to distribute the files without burning to DVD.

I would also be interested in buying these games on DVD when they become available. Please let me know when this happens.

I want to stray from DVD distribution, it takes too much time and results in useless VOB filesets. Plus the amount of data we are talking about here would be huge. One season alone could be 10-15 DVDs. It will become extremely time consuming.

Let me outline my thoughts.

1. Convert from VHS to uncompressed AVI - Each hour of the game from VHS will be about 12gb in its uncompressed format. The game i'm digitizing now will be about 30gb due to overtime. This is considered raw/uncompressed.

2. Compressed Version - Using H.264 compression the AVI will be compressed frame by frame into a MP4 container. Edges will be cropped so we get rid of the crap on the sides/top and any video blur/creep. This is where it gets dicey. Depending on the quality of the original source, too much compression can make the video look pretty bad. So each game will have to be tweaked/adjusted. File size here should run about 1gb an hour. These files are ideal for playing back on a computer or streaming/uploading to your Tivo or DVR.

3. Sharing - Looking into the legalities. We may be able to swap provided we do it in person. We'll need to figure this out appropriately.

4. DVD - Maybe someone else can do this part. The amount of time to do #1/2 above is quite a bit to say the least. The # of dvds we'd need to burn will be astounding. Not to mention the time it will take to go from Step 2 to a DVD. Contrary to popular believe, DVDs DON'T store a lot of information in today's day and age, and you can't directly burn the output of step 2 on a DVD, it needs to be re-formatted frame by frame into a VOB fileset, which takes time. Additionally I'm a quality freak, and I can't stand over-compressed video. Forcing 4-5 games on a DVD will ruin the quality to the point of it being annoying to watch, like cell phone videos on youtube, or worse.. eek!

First game at Mullins is done.. a whopping 29.3gb.. Smile of course this is before compression

Thinks I've learned so far from the commercials and television from this era:

Dale Earnhart apparently gets his oil changed at GM dealers
GMAC was still financing cars
The 90's were so close to the 80s, its scary looking back
ESPN's on-screen graphics blew chunks
Cars of the 90s look boxy
United Airlines still had grey planes
ESPN "Update" used a 36pt font and took up nearly a 1/3 of the entire screen real estate
Marty Fletcher's tie from the final rage is...wow... bright pink and green..
Its weird to watch a game where the score and time isn't on the screen 100% of the time

Great progress over the past few days... I've got 4 complete games transferred to DV format. The computer is compressing them with H264 and putting them into an MP4 container right now..

A nice find in my small box of VHS tapes...an unlabeled cassette yielded the Starter Tip Off Classic against Arkansas!

I never used Google Docs before but I just posted two games from the 2010-2011 season to the list.

Would really like to see someone dig up some 1970s stuff. I saw Coach Tom's post re the reels he had of some old games. It would be spectacular if those could be put out there. Given that they are film, I don't think there would be any copyright issues there. Would be a nice YouTube addition.

I made a little video ad from the 100 years to test my video editing skills...

Youtube has a nice old video of the campus from 1969 - if you haven't already seen it. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4iJN8HkqgYI

as far as distribution, couldn't we have a blank website with a log in page that doesn't have any indication of what you're logging into. once you log in though you can download the content. still not exactly legal but i don't see that type of set up drawing a lot of attention.
