Evan Smotrycz, a Massachusetts native, is leaving Michigan with 2 years of eligibility left, he will have to sit out a year. I think this young man fits very well with what DK is doing in Amherst.

He averaged 7pts and 4 rebs per game and is adept at shooting the three.

Beilein's a damn good coach ... must be some big-time turmoil in Ann Arbor.

Hmmm...he's from Reading, he's Laguerre's former New Hampton teammate...

Quote:
Smotrycz said he planned on finishing the semester at Michigan and did not have a timetable for his decision of where he'll go next. He told WolverineNation he made his final decision to transfer Wednesday.

"It's just a matter of what I thought was the right fit, something my family agreed on," Smotrycz said. "I don't want to say too much right now in being sensitive to the coaching staff. But it was a decision I had to make to be somewhere I was happy."

This kid would be a PERFECT fit in Amherst. I love his game. Says he wants to transfer because he wants to play more of the 3 and doesn't wanna play down low. Absolute lights out 2 point shooter and I'm pretty sure he's from Massachusetts. Would fill in nicely when we lose Javorn/TV/Freddie. It might seem strange but he basically is a hybrid of those three guys, only bigger.

Also at 6'9 shot almost 43% from 3. If he's better than any of the recruits DK has lined up, why not. He would be a good replacement for what we lose, plus instead of replacing those guys in Jesse and Chaz's senior year, give them an experienced guy.

Usually I frown upon "this guy is transferring" threads when there's no indication of interest on either side. The one exception is if the guy is from MA, which is the case here, and with Orikahi.

Mike
I normally wouldn't have posted it last night but when I was told about this I remember DK tried to recruit Evan before he decided on Michigan. He was also an AAU teammate of Jordan Laguerre with Mass Rivals and in Prep.

Marty V also has it in his column this morning.

All this ESPN coverage could only help Umass land someone like Evan Smotrycz.

He'd have to share time with Put when he became eligible as a junior. (Put would be a senior--feels like we're talking about the distant future.)

He is talented enough to be picked up by another big 6 conference team. I doubt he and Put would want to share time at the 3, but the style of 4 we play may be enough for him to think about it. Vinson has had plenty of lee way to take open jumpers around the court if he thinks they are open. I imagine that is the liberty he is looking for in a move to the 3.

Hopefully he's not thinking BC. . .If Laguerre knows him, then hopefully that will help us out.
