All it needs to do for now is replace Temple for Butler. If Charlotte were to leave for the CUSA-MWC merger then the A-10 can deal with that loss later.

^ This I completely agree with.

This is not entirely true by Katz. Yes, the A10 could deal with a Charlotte loss later. What he fails to clarify is that with the CAA exit fee vote (initial proposal was $250k to $1.2 million), it would mean that VCU and GMU would likely be OFF the table.

So if the A10 waits and does not invite VCU and GMU BEFORE the CAA exit fee vote approval, then it means the A10 candidate pool to replace Charlotte goes from:
VCU
GMU
Creighton

to

Creighton
Sienna
Boston University

Big drop, unless one is fond of all-sports budgets increasing even more with the flights from Hartford to Nebraska for non-basketball sports.

I don't think $1.2MM is enough to keep A-10 from pursuing those teams. The A-10 could possibly help with some of those costs if they feel the situation warrants it. But, I would only do it if both decided to come as a tandem. Butler is still priority #1.

Too bad the couldn't get Butler right away. They're going to be very good next year. Like final 4 good. All but one back plus Rotnei Clarke from Arkansas.

It's not just the $1.2 million though. It's GMU and VCU forfeiting their NCAA shares, which are a lot due tot he Final Four run. We're talking double-digit millions through 2016.

Tough break for both schools. Long term, both would be better in the A10. But it means giving up a lot of money up front that would take a decade of more to make up when you factor it all in. And if the A10 were to lose quality teams and the conference take a dip, it would be a big financial loss for both schools.

VCU's Share through 2017 is approx. $5m of which they will get a payout of $900K next year. GMU's is only $2.1m. Neither total is truly insurmountable and I doubt it would be a huge factor in this. Assuming that we get to a 16 member league, we get to reopen our television contract for negotiation which should lessen the pain as well. Add in the potential impact on ticket sales from increased in conference competition and I still think the A-10 is a better place to be on all account.

Quite true.

Another thing to consider: the A10 can use Temples tourney shares to distribute to Butler, VCU and GMU to help soften the financial blow at no cost to the A10 schools...since it's free money Temple is leaving behind.

Also worth noting: the CAA exit fee vote for today was postponed. Could be many different reasons, but you usually postpone a vote only when there isn't a clear outcome...since many thought that it would be at worst 9-2 with VCU and GMU against. But maybe JMU/UD/ODU are understanding that the exit fee will only hurt those 3 schools if GMU/VCU leave, since NU, Drexel, Towson, Hofstra, W&M and UNCW are never going to be flight risks to better conferences.

Great to hear. I wonder what this means for both A10 scheduling and non-conference scheduling...

It's likely not a done deal until all parties figure out the finances.

To simplify:

* The A10 wants GMU and VCU
* GMU and VCU want the A10
* But for GMU and VCU to leave the CAA now, it means throwing away much of the money that they generated with their Final Four runs...the same runs that made the schools appealing to the A10.

So long term, VCU and GMU want in the A10. But it would take them perhaps 5-7 years to earn the money they would be giving up. But that is based on the A10 being what it has been...multibid. If they get 4 bids a year, that's great. But if it drops to 1 bid with Temple gone...or if something radical happened like a BE split with Xavier, Dayton, StL leaving...the A10 would be no better than the CAA now.

So for VCU and GMU to leave, they need security. They need to get some of that money (not talking the July 1 money, but the money through 2016) to come from the A10 to secure them if the A10 takes a step back.

For Butler, it's similar about the money. But it's also that they have such a low athletic budget and need some A10 help.

My recap of the A10/CAA:

http://www.zagsblog.com/2012/04/20/sources-vcu-george-mason-butler-poised-for-a-10-move-soon/

According to Adam Zagoria, among others, multiple sources are saying this is basically a done deal.

So that's 14 + VCU, Butler, and George Mason = 17 - Temple for 2013 and likely Charlotte in the future = 15 teams being the likely number. Perhaps Butler is not coming for this year, but VCU and Mason are? Something tells me we're not exactly done here, either. 15 is an awkward number. Perhaps another large public southern school to make the pod system work and to guard against a Big East/Catholics shakeup?

As an absolutely basketball junky, this news thrills! To get to see these teams come to Amherst every other year is bigger news to me than a one a done away or even in Boston with a team like Kentucky, Kansas, etc.!
