ESPN gave him a grade of 91 coming out of high school. As a freshman at WKU he led the team in points and rebounds and was 2nd in assists. WKU was a very young team this year and struggled early on, before putting together a 7-game win streak and then finally losing to Kentucky in the NCAA tournament.

Having never watched Gordon or WKU, all I can really look at are his stats. As others have mentioned, his FG (36%) and 3pt (26%) shooting percentages are worrisome. I think looking at how Chaz performed during his freshman year at Hostra and comparing that to Gordon can be informative.

At Hofstra, Chaz was the leader in assists, 2nd in points and steals. His FG and 3pt percentages were 37% and 39% respectively. That Hofstra team was led by Charles Jenkins who scored over 20pts a game, which I would have to believe greatly helped Chaz's assists and shooting percentages (and his FG% were still poor).

Based on all of this (albeit a limited amount of data), I think getting Gordon would be a great thing for UMass. He can definitely play at the D1 level and his low FG% may be partly attributable to being the best option on a mediocre team wherein he was required to force a lot of shots. In addition to being a solid SG, based on his size and rebounding numbers he could also be effective as the 3rd guard in a 3-guard lineup.

There has been no indication that Trey isn't coming..... He transfered to M.A.C.K. Prep in NC because one of his AAU teammates wanted him to play together.

Trey's twitter still says UMass bound.

I believe we have read in other threads that Trey has continued to identify himself with UMass on his twitter.

I love a guard with a little size and a nose for the ball. Rebounding numbers like that from a guy that size indicate good instincts and a good motor.

Chaz and our style would undoubtedly help his shooting percentage.

Based on very little, I have a good feeling about this kid. Lock him up!

But if it comes down to Gordon or Freeman and you can only have one, which do you pick?

No idea....never seen the kid play. I am not, however, worried about how many offers we have out there vs. how many spots we have.....It's a situation that every team is in, every year. The staff knows who is coming and going, and they know who they want and how to deal with the situation if it truly comes down to one or the other. Maybe one can pay his own way for a year....maybe they each get 50% scholly while they sit out.....maybe someone is leaving and we don't know it, maybe someone we think is coming is not........it will all shake out.

I just like being on the short list for what seems to be some pretty desirable kids.

I think there are other ways to get one of them in without an athletic scholarship for a year. Getting both sould solve two needs and I would gto for it. Didn't Gaffney come in that way?
Edit: We have a lot of competition for Gordon. http://atlantic10.scout.com/2/1178746.html

That link says he is visiting Martelli after us, so it's unlikely he'll commit when he's here.

Sources say UMass is in great shape to land Western Kentucky transfer Derrick Gordon, who will visit this weekend.

I want Gordon!!! No question. Look at Chaz' numbers at Hofstra in his first year. I think Gordon could be as good in the A-10 with a year off.

It won't come down to Gordon or Freeman. It's Gordon or Davis, and if Gordon and Freeman commit, Davis won't be coming here.

DK or anyone for that matter hasnt mentioned anything about him. I think we are fooling ourselves if we are certain he will be here next fall. Plus, this team has no place for quitters, and from those who saw him play -- he wasnt all that impressive. He backed out of his commitment from GWU then left Vermont Academy after 3 months. Smells like a kid who cant commit to anything. No thanks. And I think it is pretty telling that DK is going after guards still -- So, I think we have 2 scholarships to offer.

Lock up this kid, he is legit. And lock up Freeman and we are in very good shape.

IV's head just exploded.
