What I like the most is that our new assistant coach has great connections in the Detroit area. So Antwan Jackson gave us a DC connection, which doesn't necessarily disappear as hse moves on. And now Coach Williamson can help us build our presence in the mid-west. A very good move from that point of view.

I just really like the fact of how he played under DK as well. I think DK has shown that not only recruits but fellow coaches and players just really like this guy

I posted this in the Matthews thread earlier today....

I have a Scout account and that quote is from the MusketeerReport (Xavier) Scout page. So, I think it was more a reaction to UMass hiring Williamson and the instant reaction to the idea his players from AAU may follow him to UMass.

I do not think he (Matthews or Clark for that matter) is a lock (or even CLOSE to a lock) for UMass either, but we're in the mix with some really good schools....

Xavier, Minnesota, Indiana, USC, Iowa, Iowa State, UConn, Georgetown and UMass have all reportedly offered. He is supposed to visit Xavier (if he has not done so already) this week.

This ESPN article from two summers ago briefly mentions our new guy as one of the top AAU coaches at at event in discussion. Noted as an actual coach, not just an AAU handler. That's good news. Means that not only are the kids he's working with getting actual coaching, but that he will be able to identify which kids in the Detroit area are most coachable. http://sports.espn.go.com/ncaa/recruiting/basketball/mens/news/story?id=5386333

In college, he was named to his conference all-defensive team!

Looks like a nice hire. We've already got the DMV (D.C./Maryland/Virginia) on lockdown, and Detroit could be a nice secondary recruiting hub. The future is bright.

Sometimes they are one and the same. Shocked

I'm sure our new hire is an actual coach, but let's not kid ourselves about some of these AAU programs.

Cal did it in Memphis, I believe.

Kellogg has already done it when he hired Shyrone Chatman. He is Sampson Carters brother. I doubt Sampson comes here if his brother doesn't. At the time Sampson was being recruited to Memphis by DK so the relationship was there but I'm sure that DK hiring his brother didn't hurt.

As a side observation, I hope this hiring doesn't fuel rumors that we are moving to the MAC in all sports. Wink

Insider article talking about the new hire. Says we have a real chance at Clark and Matthews and that our overall recruiting out of the Detroit area should be solid for years to come. "Williamson’s on board and Detroit just became a suburb of Amherst."

This might actually be a case where we get some help with having to play 4 MAC teams in basketball as part of the football deal. Looking at playing some road games in Michigan on a fairly regular basis, giving the kids a chance to play in front of family.

I didn't want to start a new thrad, but I wanted to get out of my injury doldrums and talk about the future of recruiting, which I think is very positive right now. Coach Jackson brought us a bunch of players from the Metro DC area and they have helped elevate the program to respctability again. Realistically, we can't expect to get that many players from one area again, so we have to spread out our recruiting to other areas. I think we have laid the groundwork for that with our latest additions plus coach Williamson.
We have 3 players from Florida (Freddie, Berg and Cady).
We have a player from Dallas (Trey) and one from Houston (Clyde).
We have NY & NJ covered with Chaz and DG.
Izzy is from VA so we keep our name recognition on the DC area.
Coach Williamson gives us Detroit and continued success will get us recruits from New England.
We still aren't going to get the 5 star recruits, but I think we have a better chance of getting an occasional player from the next level down, and one top notch recruit a year is all we need to knock on the top 25 door.
So while I am a bit bummed out (1960's expression) about the injury situation this year, I do think the future looks bright.
