Let those who "believe" that Flutie belongs in the Pro Football Hall of Fame alone. This is based on the sage wisdom of W.C. Fields:
Never smarten up a chump.

or another variation:

Arguing with these people is like teaching a pig to sing. It wastes your time and annoys the pig.

Time to move on to something that matters and has a real possibility of happening.

Just to clarify, once the definition of the Hall of Fame was posted, my opinion changes. If it not designed to host CFL players, then he does not belong. Because he was a mediocre NFL player.

Thanks. You're a prince, too.

You make a critical point, Shakesperean I'd say, asking the timeless question, what is in a name? You had cut to the nut of the matter. How can we know? What did the folks who built the halls of fame intend? I puzzled. Then I realized, "Hey, all that time that countless organizations have piddled away on mission statements? This is what they're for!" Freakin' eureka!

Mission statement of the National Football Museum, DBA, Pro Football Hall of Fame:

"The mission of the National Football Museum, Inc., is to promote and commemorate public understanding of the origin, development, and growth of professional football as an important part of American culture, to educate and enhance public understanding of the positive values of football, and to honor individuals who have made outstanding contributions to the sport."

True, nobody is in just based on their Canadian accomplisments. But if someone were to break the seal on that, it would be Flutie.

As for arguing how good he was as a replacement player......ugh...

My point is to show you how absurd your point of view is. Everyone who has read up on this issue for at least 2 minutes agrees that a CFL star does not belong in the Football Hall of Fame. Several people in this thread have changed their minds after reading the evidence. Are you being stuborn for the sake of being stuborn? Or do I detect a possible man-crush on Dougie?

I'm not the one who just compared American Football with European "Football".

If CFL stats were to be taken into account (which we know they aren't currently), Flutie's CFL #'s would put him behind a number of others in line for enshrinement. From the most recent statistics I could find (post 2003 season), he ranks no higher than 3rd (completion %) in any of the major career QB statistics. (4th in yards and completions, 5th in TD passes and pass attempts, 6th in QB rushing yards, 8th in QB rushing TD's and not ranked in the top 8 at all in QB rating).

The man who holds most of the QB records is none other than Damon Allen (who, you say?). He's the lesser known brother of one Marcus Allen and in addition to all of his CFL records, he holds the career passing yardage mark for any football league, having recently passed Dan Marino's approx. 61,000 yards passing.

I'm not sure anyone here would argue that Damon should join his brother in Canton anytime soon.

Actually the person breaking the seal is Warren Moon this year.

Not really what I meant....Moon had a great NFL career. The seal I was talking about would be the 1st guy elected for just his CFL performance. I don't think anyone here is arguing Flutie should get in based on anything he did in the NFL.

However, I thought Flutie was higher on the all-time lists of CFL stats....based on the #'s someone posted above, I guess he wouldn't be the one the break that seal.

If my career ws based on things I've done in Canada, I'd be in a very different Hall of Fame
