From a purely Hockey point of view it is a no brainer that UML stays in Hockey East. There is no better place for a quality D1 team in Mass. None of the alternative D1 leagues are as convenient for the fan base. 10 teams works very well for HE.

Arguements based on economics etc are plain stupid - as mentioned on the other thread D1 athletics are about spreading the reputation of the schools involved and not P&L

Holy Cross and & UConn, two D-1 schools come to H.E. for Lowell and Merrimack (two D II schools predominately) sounds like a logical deal from here. The latter two schools don't draw now, so they won't lose anything there.

Looks like the Lowell press is trying to turn it to take UMass out. http://www.lowellsun.com/sports/ci_5349603

Of course the article lacks research and truth. I understand the fans of UML are frustrated, but if they continue throwing rock over at us the will lose support to keep them in Hockey East from us.

Personally I look at Minnesota and see having all the state schools play in the same league being a good thing which should be kept here as well, and honestly I think it will. But the fans spreading the rumor that its UMass/UMass fans trying to kill their program is crap and needs to stop.

5 or 6 years ago when this issue came up and the program was ultimately saved by Cellucci, I went on record strongly supporting Lowell's program. In that time, their program has done little to nothing, their hardcore fans are obnoxious and know little to nothing about hockey, their players are more known for injuring opposing players than accomplishing anything, and I've never been to a game at Tsongas with more than 1000 people in attendance.

If they stay, whatever. If they go, see ya (and take Merrimack with you).

That's the worst thing I've ever read out of a legitimate professional newspaper. Bar none. How anyone could take the Lowell Sun sports section seriously right now is beyond me, if it's printing that thing unsigned. Unbelievable.

Not to mention factually incorrect -- it claims the program has never won HE Coach of the Year -- Cahoon won it in 2003.

Same with them saying we've put no players in the NHL (correct answer is three) and we're having attendance problems (currently 15th in the nation in avg attendance).

I don't understand how something so completely innacurate can get published.

Lastly, if you want to look at attendance issues, look no further than Tsongas.
They don't draw dick for games against ANYONE...

What a horrible HORRIBLE article. Was that a letter to the editor, or a newspaper-written editorial? I mean UMass didn't even play hockey from 1979 to 1993, so comparing the last 20 years of the programs is assinine.(i.e., "...Lowell has had five All-Americans over the last 20 years...") Then to use the all time record for UM Amherst...? I mean, most of our games have been played between 1908 and 1979...did they even wear helmets back then?

Jeff, nice comments on that site.....if I was that dude's boss, I'd be pretty concerned with his total lack of reasearch.
